Yes, Halls has had some good teams for a long time and their coach was a great wrestler back in his day, but the drop off after them is very big.

Not sure if I understand the part abt sending 5th or 6th place kids. I DO think some 5th and 6th place kids in other regions could/would have placed if they were in another region, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. They prob would have gotten a medal at said region tournament, but most likely would have been 2 or possibly 3 and out at the State Tournament. Was this what you were referring to?

Yes sir.

With Gibbs dropping the small school....and TSSAA shuffling Bearden, Farragut, Knox Catholic, and Hardin Valley to Region 3...made no sense....it definitely effected our new region. 2nd big change in 4 years.

TSSAA tinkering with things is a problem, for sure.

DId Halls wrestle Gibbs this year?  I've gone and watched region duals the last couple of years and I have to admit that it felt very lackluster this year.  I'm not from the area originally but could easily tell that was a very heated rivalry last year and the years before that.

Well now we know you are a Halls father. LOL

But to the other topic,

Let this give some perspective with how wrestling compares to other sports.

Here are high school locations for all high schools that had football this year:

http://portal.tssaa.org/common/classification/?schoolYear=2017&sportid=1

Here are high school locations for all high schools that had boys basketball this year:

Here are high school locations for all high schools that had girls volleyball this year:

Than, here are high school locations for all high schools that had wrestling this year:

See the difference? And, scrolling down below the A-AA division and click the little map next to Class AAA. It will highlight the regions for AAA in different colors.

However, here is the clear cut break down for how the 8 regions should be split. Take a look at region 4, I am sure several individuals will like them 3 splitting into two different regions. (FYI: just copied this off my original post.)  What needs to be told to TSSAA is that more focus needs to be centered on equal region/district dividing than school location, for this works perfect for other sports.

I mean there are 94 teams in AAA across the state, and geographically they may be split evenly between the state, but not by numbers. 8 teams in region 4, but 17 in region 7?? At the min. split the regions evenly. With the current 93 teams (93 next year due to Knoxville Catholic High school dropping to D2) that would mean 5 regions would have 12 and 3 would have 11. It wouldn't be that hard to split up differently for individuals. If split evenly and then also paying attention to geographic location second the regions would look like (underlined schools would be added teams or moved teams.

Isnt this why we wrestle?

We wrestle for championships.  Top of the awards stand.

Yes we like to know who was #2, #3, #4, and if my kid #16 because he got there!

We also like to know which team in which region has who, what, when, where and how.

But we wrestle for championships.

Every kid in AAA has the opportunity to stand on the top.  No matter where he came from.  Best region, worst region, most kids, least kids, the functional word here is OPPORTUNITY.

Everything else is for the chat boards and its GREAT!  But any kid from any area of our state in AAA, A-AA, D2, has that OPPORTUNITY to take the top spot.

Have any of you heard of wrestling for a "true 4th"?

Something Region 7 (formerly 6) has been doing the last few years. According to some coaches that will not be named, they felt that their region was not represented with the best wrestlers.  Apparently when they voted on it, it was the Metro Nashville coaches voting against, and Williamson county coaches voting for. I heard  one metro coach voted for, which gave the majority.  In my day, the consolation semis were the best matches,  because it was do or die. With the "true 4th" a kid has the tournament of their life, thinks he has qualified for state, then BOOM, you get beat by someone who has lost their allotted 2 matches. Like you said, everyone has an opportunity. I saw where they said the 145 bracket in Region7 had the 7th seed place 3rd. It happens. If I am not mistaken, a couple of years ago, a 7th seed placed at 132, beating the 2 seed. You wrestle the tournament for the opportunity to possibly reach the goal.

I didn't like it when it cost our 113 a trip to state this week, however, it does ensure we send the best kids to represent region 7.

As far as the seeding goes, Logan Powers from Summit at 120 was the 8 seed at the region tournament. Personally I don't understand how it makes any sense, but he came in as the 8 seed. He beat the 1 seed Brigford from Independence, then the 4 seed McCullough from Centennial and then made the finals. Powers was actually up 2-1 when he was caught mid scramble and pinned. If that match is re wrestled I say he wins 6 out of 10 times. That alone should show the major flaw in the seeding system in region 7.

Just curious, I was looking at the region 1 AAA brackets, and there are a lot of forfeits but then on the consolation bracket, the kid that forfeited is still wrestling back for 3rd. Anybody up that way know why there were so many forfeits?

I know in some smaller brackets, I’ve seen coaches forfeit big mismatches in the 1st rd vs #1 & #2 seeds, hoping to sneak out the back and make the consolation finals.

Dont know in the case your talking about.
