Pearl-Cohn at Stewart County TSSAA State Quarterfinals

I just got back in from going to this game with my better half tonight.  It was a great atmosphere for a Quarterfinal Playoff Game and both sides were very emotional.

Let me begin by saying what an incredible run by a gritty, well coached, tough minded Stewart County football team.  They end the campaign at 10-2 and have nothing to be ashamed of at the end of the day.  They have really changed the culture of the football program at SCHS and taken it to all time heights this year.  I was very impressed watching them battle against one of the state's true powerhouses.

Pearl-Cohn is an offensive juggernaut and that is putting it mildly.  #3 and #7 are big time players with the football in their hands.  #17 is probably the Class 3A Mr. Football Award winner for the year and deservingly so with what all he has had to overcome to have a senior season.  Offensively they are a beast and it will take a phenomenal defensive effort for someone to be capable of slowing them down.

Defensively I just expected a little bit more from a team that had strung together so many shutouts are was billed as being invincible on that side of the football.  On Stewart County's second offensive possession of the night they overcame a 15 yard chop block + two separate 10 yard holding penalties and still scored a TD.  At the end of the 1st Half Stewart County scored on a long TD pass to make the game 28-13 with 0;12 remaining on the clock.  The flag on the "peel back block" (as it was called) was awful and it really changed the complexion of the game heading into the locker room.  It was a terrible break that Stewart County never fully recovered from at the end of the night.

Offensively Pearl-Cohn could not be stopped tonight and it felt like they could score 60-70 points if they had kept their foot on the throttle.  Defensively though they blew too many coverages to be able to say that they played flawless or are the favorites to win 3A.  I hope that Pearl-Cohn represents middle TN well and goes out west and knocks off Milan next week in the state semifinals.  It should be a great battle.

As a former teacher/coach at Stewart County High School I wanted my final post on this thread to be something different.  Stewart County has absolutely nothing to hang their heads about.  They won 10 games for the first time in school history.  They won their first ever Region Championship.  They won their first two TSSAA State Playoff Games in the history of the school.  They won all of their "rivalry" games against McEwen (forfeit), Houston County (first time in four years), and Camden (first time in 20+ years).  I've said it before but Coach Chanz Swartz is in my opinion the Class 3A Coach of the Year for 2020 for the unbelievable job that he and his coaching staff did this year.
