8th Grade Practice Eligibility

Thank you.Us being a k-12 know the rule because we were TOLD the rule when our Eighth graders play for the high school AFTER the Eighth grade season has completed in Baseball mostly.Some try to find a gray area but there is none.Enrolled in the school,same roof same Principle.SIMPLE.

If it’s a different building with a different principle it would certainly be hard to argue same school. Ours is a great example. Same building but 2 halves. One HS side and a middle school side. Each has its own principle so our 8th graders are a no go for HS football. Same building, different principle still equals different school.

Keeping it simple is a lost art, that's why I gave ONB props for doing so... some get lost in details like program specifics and exceptions to the cut and dried rules of the matter making things harder to understand than they really are.

East Nashville (Literature) began 5-12 and we had one principal, 8th graders could play. Later the 5-8 was moved to another campus with their own admin. 8th graders could no longer play or practice till the conclusion of the school year. 5-8 has since moved back to the same campus. However, the 5-8 kept their own admin. They can’t legally practice during the spring anymore. School has to end for the year.

More to that story but I’ll leave it at that...

8th graders CAN use the high school weight room facilities.  There can NOT be high schoolers present at the time that 8th graders are using the facility.  Also, a middle school coach, that is listed on the TMSAA website has to be present.  It can be a coach from any sport.  Strength and conditioning has to be open to every 8th grader that is willing to be there as well.  Picking a select few, and not opening it up to all, is illegal.

Well there you've gone and complicated it again. Using the HS facilities for MS kids sounds a lot like it break some other rules.  Perhaps you should share the programs that do that by name.

No, still pretty simple as explained. You are not allowed to integrate middle schoolers with the high school team, but are allowed to use the facilities as middle schoolers...heck, you can use the facility to have a square dance if you procure permission!

The square dance is much less likely to be breaking recruiting rules than the football weight room.  You get that right?

I get it, but a coach could recruit players at your square dance. The underlying point is that facilities are just a place, and that illegal recruitment can occur anyplace. Our facilities have been used for everything from Zumba to charity auctions, and to not allow middle school access for fear of opportunity of wrongdoing would be unjustly penalizing them. People who intend to break rules will do so wherever and whenever, that's why the rules specify contact and not location.
