70 and a cancer survivor.

While I didn't agree with his comments on player movement in Knox County, I certainly do have the utmost respect for him as a person.  Class act all the way around.

He doesn't want to recruit, but he doesn't care if the middle school program does.

Ole Holier Than Thou leaving because he can't compete in today's climate. Looks like Shifty Steve Matthews left Ancient Eddie shivering in his visor. Too bad Concord is but stepping stone for Sober-ish Steve to get back into the game after Catholic wasn't allowed to hire him.

I am sure they will keep this one in the family at Fairygut. Don't know anything about his son but he better figure out how to recruit...and FAST. I am sure the Beerden staff has already contacted Fairygut players.

No doubt there will be some poachers.

Their rising 9th grade team has some studs on it. They recruited that bunch for sure. I will be curious to see how many stay.

Like I said, I disagree with what he said.

I have a grandson who plays in the MAC, so I am not unfamiliar with how it is supposed to work.  That said, you can have all of the "gentlemen's agreements" you want, but until Knox County sanctions middle school football and there can be some state organization rules regulating player movement the coaches are going to find away around the rules.

Oh no doubt that is the way knox county schools have been for years in the middle school football programs. Everyone complains about losing kids but won't mention that they try to take others

Having known Coach Courtney for many years, I can say he is a class act and I wish him the best in retirement. Nick Saban may have started something with 70 something coaches, he realized that the game is changing as money penetrates it, with all the transfer action in Knox County, I am sure Coach Courtney saw the same thing as Nick did,

I’ve seen varying reports so not sure what to believe. It seems like Fairygut will uphold its title as the land of entitlement with the son taking over as head coach even I know there will be better applicants for this job.

Seems like a disservice to the program to just hand it to the entitled son with no head coaching experience. I wonder how many other 6a jobs have been filled with coaches with no HC experience?

,Maryville, Bearden, JeffCo, DB, off the top of my head have current head coaches who had no head coaching experience prior to being hired.

And I believe the guy HVA just hired had never been a head coach, either.

I think he was head coach at two different high schools. between 2015 and 2018 River Ridge and 2019-21 Coach and AD at Greenville in Georgia.

I sit corrected, then.

I knew he came to HVA as the equivalent of an Analyst at Valdosta.

He sure as heck didn’t mind taking Jacob Warren from TKA back in the day…

or Gavin Wilkinson or Jack Alley or Eli Purcell from Hardin Valley…

or the Gibbs duo from Carter…

Concord is years away from being a treat of getting players that hurt other teams. No football field/stadium. No locker room or weight room. They tried private school A class football and got destroyed. Troy Fleming was not ready for that kind of competition. Division 2 A football is very competitive. It has gotten much better since splitting from the publics. I know they will get some players but there is always the chance that Concord fails at football again. I hope they succeed but that are years away from even getting and playing a schedule and winning some games. Why would you send your son there to get your brains beat out like when Troy Fleming was the coach. I know there are talks of big money coming into the program but stability and getting winning some games are more important .

Still a ways away yes, but maybe not as far as you’d think. I know they have a few very good athletes there alr with the word being more are on the way. Matthews can coach, there’s no debating his coaching resume. From what I hear, they are really making a push towards football and it’s obvious. Take their youth camp recently for example. Had over 200 kids show up. To put in perspective, Central had like 35-40. That’s gotta mean some steps towards Football becoming a priority there. Just my opinion

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
