How is Maryville Ranked No. 1 in 4A?

Maryville may not be the best team in 4A, but as others have said, "IF YOU WANT TO BE THE MAN, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE MAN." Maryville is the 3 time defending state champion and have a 35 game winning streak. So until someone knocks them off, they deserve to be #1.

 

You don't see USA Today ranking someone in front of De LaSalle do you? Of course not. They have a 150 game winning streak and haven't lost since 1991. Until they lose, they are #1. The same should go for Maryville.

These polls are getting a lot of posts to be as useless as they are. I guarantee you if you asked Coach Quarles or any other coach about them they could care less because they know it does not matter where you are ranked if you lose in the first round of the playoffs your season is over. Maryville is ranked number one because they have won three straight state titles and are riding a 35 game win streak. That is all the pollsters need to see to put them in the top spot. Thankfully there is no BCS in high school football and it is all decided in the playoffs. until that time polls are just window dressing.

To me Maryville is #1 just simply b/c they are M-A-R-Y-V-I-L-L-E. One of the more explosive powerhouse teams in the state. I really do beleive they could play any team in the state and beat them. Maryville is the De La Salle of the Southeast.

Have to agree w/MHS & 1FootballFan, the rankings mean nothing when it comes to playoff time. There nice to look at and give a team prestige, bragging rights, etc. As they say, records and rankings go out the window when it comes to game time. Any team that goes into a game saying to themselves "we can't beat them, thier the number one team" doesn't need to be playing. As to MARYVILLE being ranked number 1 in the AP poll, they haven't lost in 35 games, regardless who they have played. They are the reigning 4A Champs for 3 years running, and 4 out of the last 5. Until they are beaten they rightfully deserve the ranking. There is also a question been asked "Who do they play". They play those in the region they have to play, the traditional schools they have always played, and pick-up a team that is definitely no push over, Morristown West. By the way MW was the last time to have beaten the Rebels. GO REBELS, hope to get to escort the buses to the Clinic Bowl again with the BLUE LIGHTS & SIREN going. It's one of the perks of my job.

I was looking trying to find schedules and results from previous years but couldnt come across anything, but I did find that Maryville is 26-2 in the playoffs in the past six years. Anyone know where I could find year by year records of teams?

I remember several years ago when people where talking how much better that Memphis East was than Maryville.

 

I agree that Melrose should be the team, but until you can beat the team (Maryville) you can't be the team.

 

I am not a Maryville fan, but I do know they will outcoach you and outplay you even when you have better or more skilled athletes.

 

Maryville should be #1 until they get beat.

 

Melrose has lost one game to a team that has also lost. That is almost like having two losses.

 

It all goes back to Murpheesboro--Who brings home the gold ball.
