This is going back a ways but I remember Waverly Central in the 1960's had some great teams and played in the State finals in "67 and '68 and had a girl named SALLY SMITH. She was about 5'8" and had the sweetiest jump shot I've ever seen. She averaged around 44 points and she was unstoppable. Waverly went undefeated in '68 winning the State before classifications.

From Meigs County and the first 4 were on the same high school team for 2 years..

Rachel Powell - 3 yr starter for Georgia

Pam Irwin - 2 yr starter for Georgia and 6th man the other 2

Misty Greene - 3 National Championship rings at UT

Heather Wilson - 3 yr starter at UAB

Also........Debbie Trowbridge - 4 yr starter at College of Charleston

When Lady Vols played Georgia in National Champ. Game in 1997 there were 3 girls from Meigs who played in that game.......CAN ANYBODY TOP THAT ??

These girls lost 8 games in the six years they all played in high school....Irwin and Greene won 2 state championsips......Powell, Wilson and Trowbridge one each.....

Four straight Miss Basketballs.....Powell 92 and 93.....Greene 94 and 95

Also, back in the Mid to Late 70's, there was a girl from Loretta, I think her name was Jennifer White. She went on to play at Lousania Tech. Great Player!

Debbie Joyner from Trezevant, was possibly one of the best of the six on six era too. If I am not mistaken, she was the first 8th grader to start in a state tournament, and I know they won two, should of been three championships during her reign.

by the way, Kellie Jolly, who is now Kellie Harper and one of the greats you all have mentioned, is making her name in coaching. In her first year ever as head coach, her Western Carolina Lady Catamounts won the Southern Conference Tournament and will advance to the NCAA Tournament. Kellie is the first coach in Southern Conference to ever do that in her inaugural year as head coach. Just had to brag on her a bit. Way to go Kellie.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
