Oak Ridge vs Clinton

Back in '03, Central laid a butt kicking on Clinton. I think the final score was 71-0.  I hate it for the kids to get beat like that, but..........????

 

When Stever Spurrier was at Florida - he said that he was not going to tell his 2nd & 3rd team guys NOT to score. The way he saw it, those guys work just as hard in practice and deserve the chance to show what they can do.

 

Also...some states have a "mercy rule". Meaning there is a continous clock without stoppage once the point differential exceeds a certain # of points. Any thoughts on that???

 

I KNOW Kentucky uses that rule, but I can't remember the point differential.  I think it's around 35 points in the 4th quarter and the clock runs non-stop.

I've seen this rule used in Tn before it was Harriman at Rockwood a couple of years ago. I guess the coaches and ref's got together and played the 4th that way if it't not a rule here.

I've never seen a score like that in high school football... but you know what? Serves Clinton right for vandalizing "The Ship"! I think 74-0 was actually merciful.

How many of you slamming Oak Ridge were actually at the game? You obviously don't know any of the details. Let's see:

 

Spencer Gulmire only carried the ball 9 or 10 times. Oak Ridge only completed 4 passes. Revel Coffey only caught one pass. The third team QB played 1 and a half quarters. The 3rd teamers were being mixed into the game early in the 2nd quarter. Some of the points were on safeties and kick returns. Halfway through the 3rd quarter (67-0) the game got real slow. Up the middle, up the middle, up the middle. So, 1 touchdown in the last 1 and 1/2 quarters. That's holding the score down. There is a good chance OR could have scored 90.

 

I think Coach Shattack would have been tremendously insulted had Oak Ridge taken a knee. He understands football. Obviously, some people don't. I only hope the Wildcats are in game condition when they need to be. The starters and 2nd teamers surely didn't get many plays against Clinton.

 

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Let's just get some of the facts, not just ASSumptions.

I would like to know how not to pound someone. Do you have the kids take a knee in the second half? Do you ask kids who work just as hard in practice to fall down when they are playing?

 

Oak Ridge played 35 players in the first half. Their starters were out with 9 minutes left in the third quarter. I hate the score reflected that bad on the Clinton team, but there was no running the score up, but there could have been.

 

I just don't think you ask reserves to take a knee in the third or fourth quarter, you let them run the ball and if they score, so be it.

 

But if someone has a way to not run the score up in the game situation last night, I would love to hear how it could have happened.

 

 

I dont really think under any conditions that you should pound anyone this bad,and dont give me that crap about letting the subs play, you just dont do this to a team. And surely not a team in your on County and the Coaches and players cant control what other students do painting steps so dont make that the culprit either. I just think you have to treat children in your own County with a little more respect...

we,ll see how boyd does in AA. this is a clinton an oak ridge discussion, not about private schoools who need to play privates only an not public.

Come on Tank you know better than that you say guys were not going to score anymore. And the guys do what you say... You know go down, throw passes out of bounds what ever it takes. If OR had been on the recieving side of this you would understand.

Actually, if OR would have been on the receiving end, you would have had a big ol smile on your face last night and calling in Wednesday to laugh at OR and their fans.

Bear Bryant wrote in one of his books, that football is not a prize fight, you don't stop it. You cannot be fair to the substitutes and ask them not to give their all when they get in the game. They practice hard everyday just like the starters. As far as running the clock, there is not a provision in the rules to do that. By agreement of both coaches, the quarters can be shortened. Don't know if that happened at this particular game, but that would have been the only way within the rules to shorten the game.
