West Keeps on Rolling

Got last night off of work and decided to make the trip to West High School. Man, what a good game as West pulled it out in overtime. West looks like they are peaking at the right time before the district tourney. Everyone better watch out.

On a side note, Bruce Pearl, Steve's dad, got ejected from the game and escorted out of the gym. That is real classy and I would be embarrassed if my father got thrown out of the gym. Not a good "image" to portray for kids that look up to UT basketball.

Anyways, big game tonight....Powell and Halls. Anyone else going as I will see you there!

Bruce Pearl is the man. I would have been honored to be the offical he was ragging on.

Just another example of some hot head jerk of an official demonstrating that there is no limit to his power. Referees are really pretty pathetic on the high school level. All power and very little knowledge. At least Pearl got a bird's eye view of how bad it is in East Tennessee. Maybe Pearl could complain to TSSAA and get something done before referee's completely ruin the integrity of this great game.

I just wonder would you all be defending Jerry Green or Buzz Peterson this much had they gotten thrown out of a high school basketball game while at Tennessee. I highly doubt it but that's just my opinion

I have heard and this could just be a rumor that TSSAA refs take an open book test to become a ref. Even if Bruce was out of line how many other parents get tore up at the refs and how many do they throw out of the games.

Awesome, some refs obviously are on a power trip. I don't know if the same applies to basketball but for regular season soccer games ref's only have to take an open book test. A closed book test is required for post-season games.

Nonetheless, Bruce Pearl will remain my hero. But what you say about people not supporting Buzz Peterson the same way we do Bruce is completely true. Mainly because Buzz stunk and never commanded the same respect that Bruce does.

To become an official, you have to pass an open book test, send in a registration fee and fill out an application complete with references. You must also be a high school graduate and have committed no felonies.

But they don't throw first-year guys out there to work a varsity game. They work freshmen/JV for 2-3 years until their supervisor believes they are ready to work varsity. Most likely, if they were working a varsity game, they have been officiating for 2-3 years at least. Over those 2-3 years, those officials have attended meetings, clinics, camps, and have probably passed a closed-book test at some point if they have any thoughts of working postseason games.

That said -- I highly doubt that Coach Pearl was acting in a manner that would justify his being ejected from the game. Someone pretty much has to be out on the floor screaming repeated obscenities to get tossed. Sounds like an official on a power trip to me -- or maybe one that just hates Tennessee (could happen).

Wasn't there, don't know, but I wonder if he had not been Bruce Pearl, would he have been thrown out? I've seen a lot of heckling from fans with no "fan ejections"

I agree with you here catfish. Like I said when Pearl was hired he can get it done on the court but off the court he has serious image issues, something the Hill doens't need more of. But hey to most UT fans winning is the only thing that matters and that is sad.
