Gas Prices and Summer Practice

I've heard a few folks talk about the gas prices were keeping some players from being able to participate in summer workouts because of costs.

 

I was just wondering if any of you seen this with your school and if any of you had found creative ways to make sure all the guys can make work-outs.

the only thing i could think of is if maybe 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 kids carpull to practice and everybody throw in a few bucks for gas

Sol, I've heard families are making the tough choice between starvation or going to practice because they cannot afford to drive their kids a few miles to the practice fields. I would like to know if there are kids giving up sports because they cannot afford gas.

That would not surprise me to be honest and I commend those who rationally make the choice of family over sport. It could be tough for a family whose child is talented enough to earn a college scholarship, yet the kid can't play because of financial struggles to get him/her to practice or after practice. I certainly wish no one would fall under any of the circumstances of not being able to participate, but it certainly would not surprise me.

if a kid had financial problems about getting to practice (etc.) then i am sure all he would have to do is talk to the coach and make arrangments and i am sure the coach would do all he could

Carpool, walk, ride a bike.....there is no way gas prices should make you quit football. Maybe if these players live really far from the school, there could be a problem, but i still don't know.

I know my better half has spoken for years of hearing from coaches who he has officiated their games that some boys have to help not only with gas for the cars but also with the family day to day living expenses.

i could see this more as a problem for the more rural schools than urban.

Four years ago when the prices first went over the two dollar mark it created some problems for some kids where I worked. I can see it maybe a problem this summer????
