WHY THE HATE?

In reading many threads about Public vs. Private it is clear that many are passionately against private schools playing public schools. My son has been in pubic school until this year when we chose to enroll him and my daughter in a private school. For us, athletics was a small part of our decision, primarily the quality of education, college prep and learning environment were the most influential factors in our decision. We certainly are not in an income bracket that allows us to throw money around. But regarding football specifically, here are my observations.

Public, I said Public, high schools in Metro areas recruit. They use "no child left behind" and "educational guardianship" loop holes to accomplish this. There are a number of avenues as well such as pretending a kid wants to be a violinist because the school he wants to play football for offers that class and no one else does so he is granted a transfer. Some schools even go as far as placing rec league coaches in certain neighborhoods to influence kids to come to their particular high school. I know this to be the FACTS. In some counties schools are opened zone and kids go to whichever school they decide to, even kids from other counties. So for all the people living in a Metro area whos kids go to a public school, please open your eyes, ears, and minds before you get upset with any of the private schools for "recruiting" your players, cause your school is most likely doing the same thing.

As far as the more rural schools, I can understand the emotions a bit better. There is most likely one school in your town and there really isn't the population base for you to be tempted by recruiting. You pretty much have to play with the kids that live in your town. Thats what it was like with the town I grew up in and the team I played for. I really like the "Town A" vs "Town B" rivalries.

The 1.8 multiplier rule was put in to try to even the playing field a bit for the public schools since the private schools do not have specific zones. (FYI: if a kid transfers to or from a private school, the original school must be 25 miles away or the athlete must forfiet the next year of elgibility. That rule is waved for public school transfers). So D1 private schools are playing against public schools that have twice the enrollment.

As far as recruiting, the school we chose has a strictly enforced policy of not allowing any student who receives financial aide from the school to participate in athletics. The only recruiting we experienced was from some dads encouraging us to come to their school and play ball. No tuition deductions, no coaches offering to pick him up and drive him to school, etc...

IMO, D1 privates choose to compete with publics primarily because of logistics. In more populated states this isn't a concern because there are a large number of private schools. In TN many D2 schools travel hundreds of miles each week to play games. For many D1 privates, the competition would not be as tough if they did only play other private D1 schools.

Regardless, the debate rages on and on and on. Good luck to both privates and publics and may each player and team strive to excell everytime they are on the field, they will miss it when its all over.

Good post, as long as they keep scores, people will recruit. Its pretty rare in little rural schools.

Not quite as rare as you think. I can think of several kids at a very prominent middle TN 1A that had some big transfers. In fact, one was from a very strong private to 1A public - and his parents lived on the far end of the neighboring county. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> It happens more than you would like to believe. But you are right, as long as scores are kept someone will break the rules.

I can't think of a single one we've had. Gordansville got 3 from us this year. I don't think they were recruited...but it's hard to say. It didn't appear they would have played much for us anyway. I think rarely would apply to most all small rural schools. Just because a kid transfers does not mean they were recruited away from another.

And just because they chose to go to a private school doesn't mean they were recruited either. Sometimes I think kids choose to go to a smaller private school because they will get some playing time. In many of these big schools they'd be standing on the sidelines with no hope of playing.

Your right , but I can think of several large publics in your area who would love to still have the kids yall took from em. Like I've said before I know you DONT recruit , you DRAW players to your school with advertisements on fancy web pages , scorin 80 on bad teams , buildin nice fascilities , puttin emphasis on winning , hiring kids parents as coaches , and finally portraying the whole we will make your kids better Students, Athletes and people than a public school can.

I think we are talking about small rural schools. How many small rural schools lose players to any privates? I don't think it happens very much.

I don't hear anybody saying we're better than public schools. Seems like ya'll are the only ones saying it. It's like this class warfare type of thing. Most of us aren't rich people. Just folks who have decided that this is the best decision for our family. We aren't putting you down for your decision. You're blessed to have a great school in your area that you don't have to pay tuition.

When you said we were "building new facilities". We didn't have any facilities. We had to build a high school and it's nothing compared to the new Hardin Valley that was just built down the road which is a public school.

Do ya'll not have any dads that coach on your team? All these sinister plots you have just don't add up. You have no proof. You just throw out stuff to see if it sticks. No proof whatsoever. You believe whatever you want with little regard for the truth. Bottom line, as you see it, we haven't paid our dues long enough. As long as we get beat by everybody for a few more years, then everybody will be happy.

Comparing yourself to a 5A school when you play 1A ball isn't exactly fair now is it. You have gotten the cash to built nicer things in less than 5 years than most 1A publics will ever be able to afford. Don't deny the fact that your school and church have money you may not think you do but compare what yall have and what your parents live in and drive with what the parents of the kids yall play against every week do. I would bet my paycheck that none of your parents live in a single wide trailor and drive an 1990 escort. half the kids in our school or more live in mobile homes their happy but thats when you know your not wealthy ..........Does anyone over there fall in that category? What does this have to do with football? When Grace needs a new blocking sled one of the 10 parents driving the escalade can just go buy it. When Cosby needs one (which they do and have for 3 years) they have to sell sno cones , discount cards , advertising banners , magazines , donuts , have car washes only to find out they are still gonna be short after they pay for fall helmet reconditioning. Do you think having a bloccking sled helps , what about a practice field , tackling dummies , would any of this benefit a football team LOTS of small publics are missing these items which they cannot afford. are you missing any ? is any of yours old and worn out?

    • Harriman was better than what I anticipated. They had good skill guys and a QB that’s gonna make a lot of teams look silly. They had some silly pre snap penalties but it’s just spring and I guess that’s expected.    Oneida looks the part. They are big upfront and got a stable of backs that’s gonna carry them this year. They have a few playmakers at receiver also. They have a new receiver that has only played basketball till this year and he is very athletic. The question is can we find a QB to consistently get them the ball. They played 2-3 kids there and none looked great but they didn’t look awful either. The  defense is gonna be tough again but it’s very early and a lot can change between now and the fall.     It was good just to get out and watch some ball. I don’t know if Oneida has the team to win the region this year but just what I saw tonight I think they may be in the conversation come November.
