Ensworth vs Father Ryan

Recommended Posts

I have watched Ryan play several times this year and have yet to see anything remotely dirty. There are no Mondellis on the team anymore. Maybe that is part of the problem. I don't think they have had a personal foul all year.

They cannot match up with Ensworth in athleticism. Ensworth should have a field day.

Ensworth played 3 tough games this year: McCallie (won in OT), MBA (big win but blew a 21 point lead and might have lost if not for a TD pass being taken away from MBA on a questionable penalty) and BGA.

BGA is likely to get real this week against BA and may not be that tough.

Ensworth is like the BCS bowl teams. Beat a couple of good teams. Play a bunch of sure-bet wins the rest of the way. Find yourself #1 after everyone else beats the tar out of each other.

Re: the questionable penalty call in the MBA game: the MBA announcers (on the internet/radio broadcast) indicated that there appeared to be two linemen downfield. You hate to see a game turn on that sort of thing, but given the reaction of the MBA crew, and the non-reaction of the MBA coaching staff (it hasn't been mentioned at all that I've seen), it's one of those things that's awfully painful, but not very controversial. MBA has had a lot of penalties this year, and while some of the calls have been iffy (i.e., Ravenwood), what I saw of the Ensworth game was well officiated. It was a very costly MBA mistake, but an MBA mistake nonetheless.

I did not see the play and heard that the game was well-officiated overall but I also heard that film of the game revealed that the call was inaccurate. The call changed the entire tone of the game and was a back-breaker for MBA.

Didn't MBA lose that game by 13 points? Why was that one call the backbreaker for MBA's entire game against Ensworth? Did MBA score at all in the 4th quarter? Seems to me there may have been other problems for MBA besides the call some consider "questionable."

I hope the two teams meet again so they can "discuss" the 41 points Ensworth scored on them the first time.

But this is a thread about the Ryan game....

You may not have seen it because of the caliber of the teams they were playing. But I can almost guarente you that for Ryans next three games (Ensworth, MBA, BA) there will be a lot of players hitting the ground randomly on the field or after the whistle. From my experience and this is just my opinion, Father Ryan is the dirtiest team i have seen. I can not pass judgement on any other aspect of Ryan (maybe wrestling), but the football team was not respectable.

That play would have put MBA up with just a few minutes to go. Instead, Ensworth got the ball back and scored the clincher.

There is no doubt that MBA had no answer for Ensworth's offense, but the final spread (13 points) did not really reflect how close the game was after the half. Ensworth did not exactly shut down the MBA offense either. The TD that was called back would have given them 35 pts. Even if Ensworth comes back to score, MBA would have had the ball with a chance to win or tie at the end.

That is why the call was a back-breaker.

EHS is likely to see McCallie again in the 1st round of the playoffs. Then 2 more tough games to win it. Let's see how they do against 3 weeks in a row of quality opponents. I too hope to see them play MBA again (or BA) later in the year.

Next year, I hope they play a few more games against teams that have a chance to beat them in the regular season too.

Next year EHS will be in its 3rd varsity season and will have completed the home/home scheduling agreements made to fill up its first two varsity seasons. I expect to see some different teams on the schedule in 09.

The explanation give by some of the more responsible EHS posters is that Bowers wanted to insure that last years' senior class (the first one) had some wins to show for their sacrifice in being the first class there. I don't think anybody expected them to do as well as they did last year. Most of the scheduling commitments were for 2 years, thus Ensworth's schedule this year. If that's correct, they would have an opportunity for a more attractive schedule next year.

I await the 2009 schedule with interest.

Actually if that play had not been called back it would have put MBA down by six with less than a minute left in the game. They would have had to kick an onside kick and score a touchdown in less than one minute. That penalty could have changed the game but it is unlikely that it did.

That is not true. It would have put MBA up by 1 with about 8 minuetes and kept their momentum. Ensworth stopped them, forced a punt and then scored on the following drive. That is why it was a backbreaker. MBA would have won in my opinon. I still think MBA is the better theam and if they face each other again i promise you it will be a different outcome.

So, because of the call, they lost their momentum, and Ensworth stopped them. Then Ensworth scored again.

Now, any predictions about the Ryan game?

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
