With the weight certification that now takes place most guys are probably 10-12 pounds over what they wrestled at the state tournament. Before weight certification you would have guys that were 25+ pounds over what they wrestled only 2 weeks after the state tournament. I have been told that when Mason McDaniel (Raleigh Egypt) won the state @ 98# his weight was 117# before the finals.

I met Mason McDaniel the other day at a homeless shelter. He told me his story... a very sad one. His mother had muscular dystrafy (sp.) when he was in High School, forcing him to stay nearby. So he went to Jackson State College, a small college in Jackson, TN. After that he was wrestling in world tournaments and other major tournaments having the time of his life. He got married and a few years later his wife committed suicide. After that he started drinking, it overwhelmed him. He became dependent on alcohol. Now he works with an organization called Matthew:25. They will help him get a job and they feed him. A very sad story but he has a very good attitude and some great stories. He is very funny and a great guy. AND he still knows a lot of wrestling.

I've heard of even more extreme cases than this at 98 lbs. back in the 70's and 80's.

This was stupid, but I even went up from 134 to 155 for the Southern Open two weeks after the HS season was over. Sure gave Murray Lee Cruiz from GA. a little advantage, as i remember... ouch!!

I think two of the biggest cut stories I have heard was Aaron Bateman almost cutting down to 160 lbs for his senior year from about 185 and Courtney Coffey cutting from 240 to 215 his senior year.

That would be very average for most kids from the late 60's, 70's and 80's.

I weighed 180 to 185 during football. I cut to 160 and 152 for a few matches and I like to think that I'm fairly young, so it wasn't too far back in the day for people to cut.

Trevor Schmit (Tullahoma) weighed 184 at one point during the football season and wrestled 145 this year. He actually certified to go 140.

Casey Brewster cut a few pounds during his Overton days.

I think its healthier that tssaa manages weights during the season. People do cut before they certify, but they have 2 months to get the weight off in a healthy way... not that they do because not to offend anyone but most high school kids are not that disciplined. I really don't think they could manage it any other way.

    • Best-of-three sectional series vs East Robertson at home starting Wednesday.  They put us out last year at this point.  Go Pirates!!
    • I don't believe they have anyone that is surbers caliber but a decent staff overall.
    • Richland plays at McKenzie on Wed.  Should be a good series.  Does Richland have good pitching?
    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
