alcoa would beat greenville by atleast 4 tds i watched both games and thats my predition and i also think lexington would have beat them if they had made it but turnovers is what killed them that was there only bad game lol!!!

From an outsider's perspective, the whole Alcoa vs Greeneville debate is interesting. I for one think that would be a great game. We will never know. To predict that Alcoa would win by "at least 4 TDs" is ridiculous. I think the two teams are much closer than that. The talk about Lexington beating Greeneville after losing to Trezevant sounds like wishful thinking. I'm not a Greeneville fan, but I did watch them play EHS the past two years and don't understand all the skeptics. They were in the title game last year with a realistic chance to win. This year's team was much better than last year's team.

Fritz should stick to reporting and leave rankings to the professionals. This is the second time he's made the stupid remark about Alcoa lacking a Carmichael caliber athlete.I love Willie C and think he's amazing but the Tornadoes are LOADED with great athletes...

Greeneville is a great team that has earned all due respect. Fritz once again shows that he is very uneducated when it comes to high school football in TN. Willie C is absolutely awesome, but yes we have at least one or two! Maybe three if we try real hard.

But you cannot blame ole Fritz. His job is to sell newspapers and you cannot sell the local rag if you do not write what your customer wants to read. However, be glad you have a sports writter that is excited and actually writes about the local team. Ours have become quite bored with Alcoa and Maryville winning and execute marginal coverage of our games. To be frank, the KNS covers Blount County better than our home newspaper. Alas, they are slowly going broke and rely on the AP newslines to fill the local paper. With such exciting story lines it is really hard to understand their inability to sell papers.

Again, Green Devils, congrats on a great season. You are a very impressive team. Looking forward to visiting that beautiful stadium next year.

The Sun gives Greeneville great coverage. What aggrevates me so about Fritz is he couldn't write a story about Brazilian soccer without interjecting his beloved Betsy into it. If the Johnson City Press is so darn desperate for Greene county readers then maybe they should actually have reporters cover EVERY GAME instead of cherry picking. The only time they covered us in the regular season was when we played Betsy and the 2 big 8 teams. See how much coverage we get next year when NONE of them are on our schedule

I'm a G'ville resident and I couldn't disagree more. The Greeneville Rag only gives GHS token coverage. Wayne must be too scared that he will upset the county residents if he does too many G'ville stories. JC Press(Fritz) did an article on Willie 2 months ago. Other than the game preview, the Sun never writes additional articles.

I generally agree with you Barb, but to think that the Sun gives GHS "GREAT" coverage, you must be friends with Wayne Phillips. Can you point to any articles during the season that the Sun had? The only coverage they give is the exact coverage that ALL of the Greene County teams get. I think it's a real shame that Fritz had to do an article that Wayne should have done(Willie's story).

We have 5 schools in Greene County and they all 5 play the same sports...against each other. The Sun's circulation depends heavily on the county citizens and having their school sports in the local paper is important to them. Willie has gotten enough recognition for his accomplishments in the local paper.

Fritz is real quick to jump on the Greeneville bandwagon and I do appreciate the kind words for our team but he really has a burr under his saddle about Alcoa and I don't particularly feel his Greeneville/Alcoa comparisons serve any purpose but to inflame the Alcoa fanbase and make him look stupid.

As far as Willie's story goes, it was nice but I think he is more concerned with where he's going than where he came from. Unfortunately, everytime his background is mentioned in the press, the words "transfer" and "import" are attached to it and that is often viewed negatively. I really think the Sun's restraint was admirable.

Congrats to: Greeneville, Alcoa, Maryville, Signal Mtn., and Webb! You represented the EAST WELL! I just don't seem to get why their is arguing and complaints on here? Greeneville did not run the score up at all. The only time we did was to go for 2 to secure that record, which we now hold. I will say this though, the Trezvant team was way out of line and were just trying to start fights. Oh and I love how their coaches handled them and then later blamed the game on the refs. REAL CLASSY.. Thanks for the slashed tires, I hope you all enjoy your silver ball! :roflol::thumb::lol:

It is indeed a shame that our victory celebration has to be marred by the unfortunate behavior of our opponents instead of recognition of the incredible highlight reel performances by the Devils....Hall's monster hit on the Bear QB was one he won't be forgetting any time soon...BJ's diesel driven runs mowing over Trezevant defenders, Willie's leap into the endzone over a couple of defenders and Ben Ogles kicking with a big 'ol bulls-eye on his jersey...49 yd fg and perfect PAT's even with the defenders trying to take him out. These are the things we should be posting about...GO DEVILS!!!

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
