Henry County vs Powell

Final thoughts from me for the year:

1 Best football game I've ever seen.

2 Out of 10 games, Henry County wins 3. Powell wins 3. 4 ties.

3 Mobley should attend the school of his choice. Walk on anywhere. Walk away with a full ride after one practice. Should not consider Tennessee. If they can't see talent this close to home, they will continue to fail.

4 Mobley is the best running back Henry County has faced in 15 years

5 Powell beats Ridgeway 10 games out of 10

6 Very disappointed with all the whining about the horns. Powell posters win first place with whining about the horns. No one else came close.

7 Classy football on both sides. Run the ball, pass the ball, get tackled, go to the huddle. That's it.

8 Moronicus: You and I could probably get along ok in real life

9 Don't beat your coach up. If we hadn't forced the fumble, Mobley would have run the next 2 downs. I'm afraid to admit what would have resulted.

And now! For the final FACT of the year!

The Henry County Patriots are the 2011 5A State Champions in High School Football!

Just one other small fact I just remembered.

We are gonna be really, REALLY good next year.

Also NicD91...It was Mobley Mobley Mobley...(well deserved)..But Nothing said about Jelks ,who is a Vanderbilt committ and had several big plays! What A Game!!

Well, I also did not mention anything about Najee and his 140+ yds, Shaq and his 150+ and 2 TD's, or Caleb and his hardnosed play running, receiving, blocking and tackling on both sides of the ball. There are so many I could mention because this is a true team! They played like a well oiled machine all year long and the proof is that gold ball sitting at HCHS right now and those soon to come "PHAT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS"! The only reason I mentioned Mobley is because we have never seen him play in person but he lived up to all the hype. Jelks is well deserving of an SEC school and I am thrilled that he chose Vandy! I think others could go D1 on this team as well. Just too much to mention everyone and everything they do! Absolutely great game and great performance by all HC players!

I just want to say that Powell was a very good football team, Mobley was an excellent back and the Patriot Fans were great, thank you for all your support of the kids and program, the fans of the Patriot football program are second to none. Now for the men of the program, What a great group of young men, they were spectacular all season, they gave all of Henry County somehting to hang their hats on with no if's involved. I stood in amazement last night looking at the stands. what a great day for Henry Countians from the send off to the welcome back. Yesterday was a day that will never be forgotten in the lives of many people, and I feel very fortunate to have experienced it.

I don't have a dog in the hunt for either one of these teams so this is truly an unbiased opinion on the game. Terriffic game by both teams and alot of class by both involved so congratulations to each team. There was quite a few points left out on the field by both teams due to turnovers and costly penalties especially in the red zone. But I also feel there was points left on the field by the referees... the Powell quarterback definitely scored a touchdown on that run and it was obvious while I watched it live and on the replay and the ref was standing right there with a perfect view of the play. Regardless of that call if you can't score from the 1 yard line (even if you shouldn't have had to due to the call) due to penalties will haunt these seniors and coaching staff for a long time. I'm not trying to be critical of the team but I really felt Powell got robbed in that situation after a great individual effort. Great game to watch and once again congratulations to all the kids involved.

You're either blind or you were watching the wrong game. Refs did an excellent job. Better TEAM won.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
