CPA Basketball

In another topic it was mentioned the effect on other sports would be the reason to avoid Division II.

Wouldn't a private school like CPA have a uniform philosophy about "attracting" student athletes? I mean, wouldnt the entire athletic department want to follow the path of the boys basketball team if it leads to such great success?

CPA would be just fine in Divsion 2. They would be in the small school division and win the baskeball title every year. Football could contend with Webb for the title every year. Baseball would be competive with most everyone except maybe BGA. Softball has never been any good anyway so that would not change anything. Volleyball and girls basketball would be very competitive in small D.2. Soccer also. Weak excuse.

And please, PLEASE do not go the ministering to the public school route. That is nothing but a joke.

The main function of the school is ministering to people in the area, sports is secondary. You may get tired of hearing this, but it's the truth. There are things more important than who wins or looses a game.

If that is the case, and it does not appear to be, then why gather up the all-star team? Hardly does anything for the "mission". Take the kids that have been at CPA their whole lives and play since athletics are just secondary.

It USED to be that way at CPA, not anymore. You are only kidding yourself. Take off the jaded glasses and see what EVERYONE outside of the CPA cirlce sees.

Mission failed.

Why don't you worry about your own situation up there in Madison? I would be careful about the recruiting talk, most people in the area believe you all wrote the book on it!!

Yes, this team exists. It is made up of some CPA and some outside CPA players.  It's an invite only team. No open try-outs. Time will tell as to how many of those players end up at CPA in the future.  The current Seniors were Coach Maddux's AAU team when they were about that age.  It's a strategy that has worked well for them.

Rulefollower, It’s pretty apparent from your posts, you have issues with Coach Maddux.  Maybe it’s something you need to address with him personally rather than on CoachT, since it looks like most of your posts involve CPA and the boys basketball team.  If you want your son to play on the team, then why doesn’t he join?  Coach Maddux doesn’t have try-outs for his high school team, so any young man that wants to be on the team is welcome to join.  But, he will have to earn his playing time.

Here are the facts on the AAU team you are talking about that involves some of the seniors on the current CPA team.  The truth is that most high school players today that start for their school teams has played with some AAU or travel team prior to playing high school basketball.  Not much different than baseball or soccer players.

This AAU team you speak of, was started by a couple of CPA & MBA dads when these boys were in the 5th grade.   Most of these players were guys that played against each other in the WNSL league.   This team was started under the TN Tigers organization, which was started by Cleve Harris years ago and later became part of a newly formed TN Select organization.  Drew Maddux was not the original coach, He was asked to coach the team so the dads could avoid the problems you sometime run into when you have dads coaching the team.  Coach Maddux only coached the team 2 ½  years and there have been over 9 coaches and assistants over the years.  Coach Maddux had very little input in the selection of the players on the team, and the couple he did recommend, were only average players at best.  The first team had (2 ) Oakhill/MBA players,  (3) CPA players,  (2) Grassland players, (1) Goodpasture player,  and (2) BGA players.  Over the years there were around 30 players that played on this team.  There were some try-outs, but not widely announced each year b/c most players returned and we only needed to add 1-2 players each year.   Some of the players on the team also played with other AAU teams and may have only played in a few tournaments.  We did have many requests for boys to join the team, but the player numbers were usually limited to 9-10 players so everyone could get playing time.

Even though CPA had several players on this team, there were also (3) players  MBA, (4) BGA players, (4) Brentwood HS players, (1) at Maplewood,  (1) at Collinwood,  (2) Ravenwood, (2) Franklin HS,  (1) Goodpasture,  (1) Brentwood Academy,  (1) Davis Lipscomb.  Yet you very seldom hear talk of these players playing on Coach Maddux's AAU team.  Most start on their teams and several are their teams leading scorers or best player.

It’s not a strategy as much as you think, b/c many high school boys and girls coaches, coach AAU teams for additional income and this has been the case for many years.  Some even have give private lessons or have coaching clinics, like Coach Brooks did when he was at CPA (private lessons).

Agreed 100% with LookingAround:  Most of the kids, Allsmiller, Richard, Howell and Bonds, all played with Coach Duke (whose son Jalen plays and I believe is the leading scorer for MLK)  - Howell has been at CPA since kindergarten.  These kids have been great friends since 5th grade and have always wanted to play together.   Their parents are strong Christians and wanted to keep the kids together at CPA.  There is no strategy here folks.  Are they all AAU players, absolutely.  But they are all also Gym rats and have bought into the system Coach Maddux has of hard work and dedication.  Manual is also one of the players on the team and sometimes is a starter.  He also has been at CPA since kindergarten.  Richard and Bonds came in 6th grade (maybe 7th) and they were not elite bball players, they were 12 year old kids.  Coach Maddux has taken them to the level they are today.

I hope CPA continues to draw top level students and athletic talent in all programs so that we have the best opportunity to play at the highest level and compete for state championships.  We have recently one them in Boys and Girls Bball, Girls Soccer, Golf, Tennis, been to the state championships this past year in Football, Men's soccer and are close to getting to that level in baseball and volleyball.  The real difference between CPA and the publics is not elite players, it is elite coaching and coaching staffs.  Kids want to play for them so they are attracting great talent.

Should CPA be in D2, maybe, maybe not, quite frankly, as a CPA parent, I am fine either way.  However for the next 3 years we are in the Publics until the time comes for TSSAA to change it again.  Sorry folks, it is what it is.
