That was the year before Joe Gaddis arrived.

I remember that team. Milan was probably the best team on your schedule that year and you guys fought us the whole way. The score was very deceiving. The talent was definitely there to be successful. Gaddis just put you over the top. He got more talent on the field and the coaching side of the equation definitely increased.

True. Our numbers nearly doubled in Gaddis' first year. He has quite a way of instilling enthusiasm. 2004 still wasn't peachy, though, as we still finished 2-8. But the games were much more competitive that year (including the Milan game, which was 21-14 in favor of the Dawgs). The tide didn't really begin to turn until '05 when we dropped to 4A. Made the playoffs that year and really haven't looked back since.  

 

The sad part is, Donnie Webb (the coach here prior to Gaddis) isn't a bad coach at all. He just had to deal with a lot that was out of his control. Hard to get much positive momentum going below you when there's no positive momentum above you. He's actually doing pretty well at Franklin now, and he's always been a good X's and O's guy. He was the defensive coordinator at Oakland when they won the state championship back in '98. 

 

With Henry County being his alma mater, I think he simply chose his heart over his head when he came here to coach in '99, because no one was going to win here in the early 2000's. Not with the way things were being done at the very top.
