Coalfield lost by three at Tellico last night. Only had the football players for one day so things will get better. Will be interesting to see how quick they get into the basketball swing of things.

Yea, they were OK considering five of top 8 or 9 were football players  and hadn't practiced but about once, if that. Sloppy early... Ok as the  game wore on. Not sure where points will come from after Mckinney though. He'll need to be more aggressive to the basket... cause they need 20 + every night from him to be successful against the better teams. They'd probably beat TP by 15+ with a couple weeks of practice in.

Grace GCA had to play without 4-5 football players vs Oak Ridge last night. They lost 87-67 but had 4 players in double figures. Arnold's line was 21pts, 11rbs, and 6 assist. Walker (12) Ledford (13) Gettlefinger (15) and Peters (6). Benjie Connor didn't score but he is new to basketball at GCA HS and played very well in the 5 spot. Tall and lanky but tough as nails and battles. Good pickup to this roster.

Oak Ridge on the other hand....wow.....12 players scored in the game and they hit 10 3pointers. It was really game of 6A vs 2A. Grace has some good kids but without the football players we had little to no shot to win. But I was very happy with what I saw and even though Higgins and the Big  Guy didn't play, Oak Ridge has enough horses I'm not sure the score would have been much different. You can only play 5 at a time and they have 10 better than most teams Best 3. GCA could have played better and defended way better. But.....it could have been way worse too.

Farragut comes to GCA Thursday Night. That should be a closer indicator but again, no football players so......who knows.

Go Rams

With 5 of 7 District 4 teams with a game under their belts their was some surprising results.

Oakdale looses to Monterey by 7 at home. Most feel Oakdale would compete for a Region title. Monterey is not expected to even be in top of their District.

Coalfield looses to Tellico Plains by 3 at Tellico. Coalfield ended Tellico Plains season last year in Region.

Oliver Springs looses to Clarkrange by 24 at home. The margin is a surprise.

Wartburg beats Northview Academy by 16 at home, for the only win in District 4. Some believe Northview will compete for title in District 2. This is a good win and a strong margin.

Sunbright looses to Scott High this is not a surprise as Scott is much bigger school.

Should know more this week as more games to come.

The Oakdale score was a bit of a surprise...although Monterey won 20+ games last yr (and beat OAK then as well) Coalfield was not really unexpected...Majority of the kids that play were FB players and had barely been on a bball court before the game... and Northview won just 7 games last year... so Wburg winning at home not a shocker....the Carroll kid (right name?)is a really a good player. OS  is not very good... .500 would be a good yr for them.

Didn't expect this out of Oakdale. They only hit one three Tuesday. Hoping this was just a fluke. Oakdale won't have another game with only one made 3 all year. (Even with one three made, they still scored 73). I just hope that they didn't spend all summer listening to how good they are. Last year, they had something to prove.

Oakdale split with Monterey last year, and Monterey lost their leading scorer to graduation. Oakdale had no seniors last year. Do you think Abernathy (a starter and captain last year) not playing this year may affect them this year. I thought this was the most sure win in district Tuesday.

I agree Coalfield would win this game in a week once football players get some court time. Tellico is not a easy place to start your season.

Wartburg beat a Northview team that went 7-9 last year that had no seniors, and will be in hunt for District 2 title. Winning by 16 was most impressive start in District 4.

I think Oakdale, Coalfield and Wartburg should be tops in District, how they finish its to early to tell. District 4 will have a Morgan Co. flavor this year'

Clearly last year was a good year for Oakdale, but in the past they have definitely underachieved in some years. There have been some years where the talent to compete and win was there and they just couldn't out it together for some reason. I hope that this is not the case this year for the Eagles. They have to much talent to be blowing games to teams like Monterey. I think they get things going in the right direction, but Monterey is a loss that shouldn't have happened whatsoever.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
