6 classes in basketball

I know we had the discussion before, but is it time to bring it back? I was at the state tourney yesterday and attendance looked average. I'm not in favor of crowning 6 teams, but if it helps attendance maybe it's time to go that way

Attendance was actually up.  There was more at the state this year before the championships that there was the whole state tourney last year.  I am in favor of doing it like they do in Kentucky.  Crown a real State Champion by doing away with classifications and let publics and privates play each other as well as large and small publics.  http://usatodayhss.com/2016/state-tourney-notebook-attendance-numbers-way-up

Don't know if we need 6 classes or not, but their definitely needs to be more than 3. When u have some AAA schools with 1,000 students trying to compete with schools that have 2,200 students, most years it won't happen. When is the last time a Small AAA school won the State Tournament? It's not as big of a problem in the A & AA divisions.

Everyone thinks that their situation is unique,1,000 vs. 2,000 is no more unfair than 400 vs. 200...in fact since five players are on the floor in all classifications, I'd say that the odds of five "equal" players would be worse in the smaller classes...same as if it were 5 vs.10 to draw from.

Definitely agree with you here. Fielding 5 players in the smaller schools that are competitive is harder than with larger schools. It's the law of probability. 6 classes is way to much of your talking about 6 total public champions. We already have 5 state champs as it is

Why don't we just give everybody a trophy and be done with it? Wait they already do that in that Upward crap.

Oak Ridge just got clobbered by Riverdale, about 2200 students to 1300 students but we'll be back next and try again.

Kinda like it used to be in drag racing "Run what Ya brung" Just play the game and quit crying.

Leave it like it is with the exception of all privates being D2. The football argument doesn't compare to basketball as they don't play as many games so the extra travel time isn't as big of a factor and they need many more players compared to how many basketball needs. It's a lot easier to find 5 good basketball players than 22 good football player and most small schools have to have football players playing both sides of the ball compared to larger schools. The comparison just isn't the same.

The new charter schools will change the class cutoffs. It is still hard to tell how much some/most private schools going to Division II will change the breakdowns. Four ought to be at least looked at. Even if you dont need the numbers as in football it is difficult for 200 student schools to play ones with 500, 550 vs 1050 and 1100 vs 2000 or more. Adding one more state champ would not be giving "everybody a trophy."

    • Yeah, but if he goes to Science Hill they are guaranteed at least a win over Kingsport and that's basically the NET Superbowl
    • I expect Sevier County might be pretty good, perhaps Mo West as well.     But I don't see either of them getting out of round 2.          The rest of the region gets smoked in round 1.            Except for those once-in-a-blue-moon anomaly years the NET big schools are pretty much the same every season.
    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold. If you were around at that time and have any pictures of Kyle, please go onto Alexy Winesburgh FB page and post. Thanks, Doug Benton
    • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
    • I understand Gibson Co. will be announced tomorrow with a familiar name. Not sure about So. Gibson.
