Well after the first round of district play is complete last week here’s my two cents on things.

  1. Macon is very well coached and strong but not deep. They could contend for a State Championship this season. The loss to Upperman was unexpected to me.
  2. Upperman is another team that’s very well coached but not as strong as they have been in years past. When it gets tournament time they will be in the mix. I didn’t see them beating Macon but they did.
  3. Dekalb in my opinion is playing a little better than to be expected. I think they are talented but not as well as other teams in the district. Hopefully They didn’t peak to early.
  4. Livingston is another team that’s coached well but the talent level at this time is not as strong as it has been. They could definitely be a spoiler in the district to someone by years end.
  5. York has two of the top players in the district but continue to lay egg after egg. I feel like the caliber of coaching is a lot of the problem there.
  6. Cannon unfortunately is the biggest disappointment in the district. This team is very talented and at the same time very inconsistent from one game to the next. Which falls on the shoulders of the coaching staff.
  7. Smith isn’t as talented as years past. They also have a new coach which I feel will have them headed in the right direction very soon. Especially after the game against Dekalb.
  8. Watertown is probably the youngest team in the district along with their coach. It will take them a couple years to get things headed in the right direction in a very competitive 8AA district. Where they could pull an upset any given night.

Nice summary.  My 2 cents is that Upperman has more players than Macon.  Macon probably has the better player(s).  Larry and Dana both do good job.  If Macon gets lead upperman cant dictate pace like they did at Baxter. Only 2 teams in district that can win sub state game.

21/21 at the foul line pretty impressive and does wonders for your free throw %. UHS freshman point guard did this last night against YI plus another 15 points to go with that.

She is very good a long with the rest of her team the freshman at Dekalb is good also probably more to in the district as well

Agreed. I can see both getting back to state this year. If that happens, Dana might want to stay a little closer to the coaching box this year.

MC really needs to win the rematch, simply to get that monkey off their backs. Current roster has been on the floor for at least 8 of those last 15 losses to Upperman. That weighs on a young athlete's mind, no matter what anyone tells you. Shooting as poorly as they did at Baxter and keeping within eight tells me that round two might be a little different.

MC needs that secondary scoring and when they get it, they're tough to beat. It's when they have nights like they did at Upperman that they are especially vulnerable.

As competitive as 8AA is at the top, AA as a whole is still wide open. At least 12-14 teams have a very realistic chance to get to Murfreesboro and most of them can win it. The tourney is shaping up to be a great one.

    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
    • What is the hold up here? I have not heard anything in weeks. Are they waiting for the right person or is something else going on?
    • Per usual, we'll be hard to beat in the regular season, I'm sure. It's the post season that I'm more worried about, specifically the coaches. Maybe they'll be able to make some adjustments that will keep the momentum in our favor. How's Grays recovery coming along?
    • Something don’t add up here a college coach is not going to turn away a good player they need just because they didn’t get along with their high school coach
    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
