I remember some years back where the team playing against us attempted a FG only to cover the ball and gain possession. The FG attempt was about 50 yards or so. The ball was covered near the 5 yard line. The other team gained possession and scored a few plays later. It was a designed play by the other team. The opposing team's coach was pretty sure our team was unaware that the ball was live. The other team didn't try to advance the ball into the end zone, but they made sure they covered the ball. I never forgot it.

Years ago I was broadcasting a Karns game and a coach by the name of Bankston (first name escapes me) kicked a "field goal" instead of punting because he had a tremendous place kicker, name was Foster if memory serves, and didn't have anybody who could put it 20 yards.  I thought he was nuts the first time I saw it, but as the game went on I began to understand why he did it.

Team B I believe takes over at the 5.

I think his name was David, but don't bet the ranch on it. His brother played at Auburn and transferred to APSU.  His name was Craig and I think a 3rd brother was a G.A. at Marshall along the time of their plane crash.  

Pretty sure the kicking team can't recover a missed FG att before the ball reaches the end zone and retain possession.

A Field Goal attempt is a scrimmage kick and is processed in the same manner as a punt is as a non scoring scrimmage kick.  According to NFHS rules section 2 scrimmage kicks, article 5:  paraphrased - the kicking team can catch or recover a scrimmage kick beyond the neutral zone however the possession turns over to the receiving team at the point of first touch by the kicking team.  Even if the kick is considered jointly possessed or recovered the possession turns over to the receiving team.  Without the receiving team touching the ball beyond the neutral  zone any call awarding the ball back to the kicking team is incorrect according to NFHS rules which TSSAA abides by.

If the receiving team let it go though, it would become a dead ball & go back to the original LOS...

No it wouldn't.  A FG in high school is exactly like a punt. It can be returned and it is dead where the ball is blown dead.

I remember them playing Oak Ridge that year. I thought they were nuts for trying field goals instead of punting. They did it several times that night.
