Covington last year in the championship game does not agree. I now the phrase " long time " is a relative term so I assume, you are talking in the last 2 or 3 years.

I don’t remember the last time Alcoa has been beat by a public school in their class. Last years Covington’s team may change their tune in December

I feel like if Pearl Cohn gets their they have a really good chance to beat Alcoa.

If there is a team in 3A that can match up with Alcoa it might be PC.  They have athletes but do they have the coaching? I only say that because I have no idea how good the Pearl Cohn coaching staff is and until they win a championship  I will wait to anoint them.

`ol Sonny Moore...........just for grins.

  1 OAKLAND                                   9   0   0   100.90   142.37
  2 MARYVILLE                                 9   0   0   110.41   136.16
  3 ALCOA                                         8   1   0   101.46   135.35
  4 PEARL COHN                              9   0   0   109.26   130.85
  5 McCALLIE                                    8   1   0   102.31   130.69

By his poll, Alcoa would be a 5 point favorite on neutral field.

It does say a lot about the strength of 3A football! Two teams in the top 5 regardless of classification!

PC is the real deal this year. They can take on Alcoa and it would be the first public 3a team to beat them since I can remember. It will be the most interesting State Championship this year.

I think the last public school to beat Alcoa in the playoffs was in 1999. But Slant or BC may have better info.

    • Anyone know how the scrimmage at Central went?
    • I grew up watching Greene Devil Football since I could walk and still close with a lot of the coaches so should know my history pretty well lol.  Everything worked out the way it should have but firmly believe McCurry would have won some State Title if he wouldn't been let go (Greeneville still runs the same D he brought here and he let Ballard run the O and stayed out of it when it came to calling plays.  Greeneville was put out in the Semi's McCurry's last year against Maryville and the next year Greeneville stayed in 4a and was State Runner up playing were they were placed for the first time by the TSSAA.). It was definitely a McCurry and Ballard show that turned everything around along with the Community buying in and revamping the weight room and field house. Since Ballard got promoted to HC every Coach after him has been within the Greeneville Coaching staff because your right, they know what it takes to win a state championship.  Ballard was a master mine on O and what i think Greeneville has lacked since he left and let some Championships or making it to the Championship slip away over the last few years
    • Sounds like you know your area history well. Going back and looking the records were better than I thought but mostly still beating Upper East TN schools. Ballard sounds like he came/was promoted at the right time.    I do think it’s no coincidence that them keeping the HCs as guys who were former guys on the staff. Too many times schools want a “state championship” leveled coach from the outside but they don’t know the landscape. Promoting from within will help with less turnover and keep the program consistent.
