At what point in time do you expect to be able to GUARANTEE everyone's safety? Good question. I don't know. As long as it takes. We are still learning about this thing . Medicine has recently come close with some viable options that seem to be effective. However, in urban communities, it is wrecking havoc. Memphis has been hit pretty hard. It just might not be prudent to.play the games at this juncture. An outbreak due to exposure has the potential to be catastrophic. Heck, the adults don't want to follow proper protocols. Don't expect the teenagers to be in more compliance.

This is here permanently... there may soon be vaccines, more knowledge about the danger to their age group, and/or medications that will counteract the harsh symptoms when contracted, but there'll never be a world where Coronavirus isn't a threat to some portion of the populous again. I see your point about rural Tn. vs. Memphis, but don't be fooled into thinking that the youth of both communities aren't intermingling on a daily basis. Your Director of Schools has a plan that would be sound only if the students were quarantining themselves from everyone not living inside their household, and that everyone in that home were also doing the same. The kicker is that I'm not arguing against your points... just stating that I'm not sold that SCBOE's plan of action is more beneficial than ours. We have kids who don't eat on a regular basis without school meals... who also have no structure, no discipline, and no supervision without school. Add to those indisputable facts that teachers are responsible for reporting 75-90% of child abuse cases (depending on who's stats you use), and that with social distancing came a drastic increase of domestic abuse cases, indicating that child abuse likely increased too, yet reported cases have fallen by half. Mental health experts are issuing warnings left and right to closely monitor school aged children for symptoms of depression and suicidal tendencies brought about by lack of contact and structure not provided them because of school closures for extended periods. Logic says that school is "dangerous" because of close proximity... logic also says that the lack of school is also dangerous. The elephant in the room! This is very political! Republicans and Democrats see this virus in a totally different perspective. Some real deal research has been abandoned in this matter. The numbers. Active Cases in Shelby County 3,183 201 down from yesterday / 12% of cases Recovered in Shelby County 22,656 323 added from yesterday / 87% of cases Total Cases in Shelby County 26,528 122 added from yesterday Deaths in Shelby County 366 0 added from yesterday / 1.4% of cases Total Tests Taken in Shelby County 241,801 Average % of Positive Tests in Shelby County 10.91% Cumulative (all time)
dannyq
Those are the numbers with no one really quarantining anymore and children and young adults not practicing social distancing nor wearing mask. Let the boys play!!!!!

APSUguy20
Is SC going to play politics like metro and cancel fall sports? I hate it for any of the kids that miss out on many great memories. Edited August 28, 2020 by APSUguy20

I'm sure that he thought that TSSAA would "negotiate" some of his concerns and concede some points, but 'Ol Chilly verbally punched him in the mouth with a very direct and dismissive reply. I Expect Dr. Ray to take the exit route that allows him the least amount of scrutiny as he tries to slink away with his tail tucked, and that may be to cancel all sports...stay tuned.
