It's not too far fetched as far as a former coach being the acting HC. Won't be calling any plays etc, but meeting with the officials before the game and stuff like that. Perhaps accepting/declining penalties or talking with the refs. All of these things are easily taken off of the plate of an OC/DC that already has to make a game plan knowing they can't lean on their HC for in game adjustments. This allows the rest of the staff to just do what they normally do on a Friday night.

Good points as well. Haven’t thought about it like that.

If this actually happens, this post makes the most sense of any that I've read on here.

The ADs are already part of the pre game meeting with officials.  They also have duties during the game itself with game administration.

You are correct. I would say that it would be easier though to add on the non coaching aspects a HC has to an AD than an assistant or coordinator. Pre game meeting can be done with one person killing two birds with one stone. Since he would not be calling plays if there was a clock malfunction that could be handled with ease. All that is, is a phone call to the press box anyway.

Your thinking makes much more sense than some of the outlandish conspiracy theories that have been put forth on here
