  1. I didn’t ‘hear a name.’ The candidate in question, which I obviously can’t name, told me personally ‘I have applied.’ As for Fitzgearld my biggest concern, were I a Rhea booster, would be that he can retire soon if he so chooses.
  2. Not a Rhea Co. follower, but my stepdad is. My money is on someone not listed here.
  3. A system in a neighboring county here in Georgia has a policy that a coach has to teach (or be an administrator) at the school he coaches at. In other words, you can’t teach at the middle school and be on the high school coaching staff.
  4. I know that a friend of mine has applied at Rhea. He would be a solid choice.
  5. I too had not heard of Liberty until the year they played Alcoa. Hadn’t heard of Madison Academy until I read your post just now. Lol. But I really don’t keep up with that part of the state, only east and middle.
  6. And Chris Whaley and Tez Davis and….
  7. I figured the Rutherford Co. schools already had turf. All except two here in NW Georgia have it, and neither of them want it.
  8. It’s very difficult to hire coaches at schools like this. Your best bet is to hire a veteran coach who has retired or is about to retire. Think Larry Kerr at Union Co. a few years back, or the late John Mullinux at Tellico Plains. Of course, the trouble with that is that they likely won’t stay long.
  9. Sorry to hear this. Gary Rankin once cited him as someone he patterned his programs after.
  10. Agree with all except 5A and 6A. And granted 5A is just a gut feeling.
  11. Game 15 experience will be the main difference. Oakland by 17.
  12. With you on all except 4: Dyersburg, Page, Houston, Bradley.
  13. It’s definitely the most anticipated game in Tennessee for me tonight. Followed by Memphis Southwind at Page.
  14. Like them all Mr. Barney, except I too like Oakland. That game and the Memphis Southwind at Page game are the two most intriguing to me tonight.
  15. Only coaches with at least two Lombardi Trophies need apply.
  16. I agree that Bearden wins in Round 2.
  17. No dog in this but I wouldn’t judge Coach Rankin based on Alcoa, he walked into a gold mine there. Rather, I would judge him on Smith Co. and Riverdale where he took over subpar programs and made the big winners. His first team at Smith Co. finished 0-10, his final two teams finished 10-0. When he moved to Riverdale they had never been past Round 2 of the playoffs. After going 4-6 his first season, they lost more than one game once the rest of his tenure, and that was an 8-2 team that made the state final. As for Alcoa, he took over an excellent program and took it to another level.
  18. I was surprised that you guys struggled so much with Heritage last night. I live in Georgia and Heritage is not all that good, especially this year.
  19. Tyner’s HC from last season is now a position coach at a school here in Georgia.
  20. Not quite always Mr. Ron. I go back as far as 1980 and in the 80’s I can only recall 3 transfers off the top of my head to get in a better program. However, I wasn’t in your area in those days.
  21. Scrimmages are about as useful as a bucket of ice on the North Pole. You never know which coaches take it seriously, and at best they are going to play it vanilla.
  22. Here in Georgia after you have a region meeting and set your region schedule, you just get on the phone and stay there until you end up with 10 games. You may call a coach about a certain date only to have him tell you he is booked that week but that Coach so and so is looking for a game that week.
  23. Was 43-6 at the half in ‘93, if memory serves, at Clinton.
  24. Yes, sir. Lincoln had a heck of a coach as well. I remember hearing about that 98 game, even though I was back in Georgia by then.
