Milan and Upperman

I think you need to look at what sparked this discussion. You and your buddy making excuses as to why you lost and then call out Chantel Poston for being a poor sport.

This has already been talked to death. I went in and edited my post 6 minutes before you posted your reply to it. I do not believe she is a poor sport, but there is something she did, a couple times today, that I believe her game could do without. As turnadouble said, what happens on the court, happens on the court. I tried to retract, but you insist on keeping it going.

I think my team's play did speak for itself as we won by 20 points. You and your buddies can sugar coat it all you want, but it still says Milan won by 20 points.

Yup, you won by 20. I cannot argue that. You wore us out. Broke us down, kicked our tails. What more can I say. no one is denying that you pulled away, in large fashion.

Sorry to be a jerk, but you say I'm on here "thumping my chest" but ignore the fact that nothing came from me until some comments that were either 1. Excuses or 2. Pathetic when you call out a player because your team just got smoked.

Go back and re-read my posts. I have NEVER ONCE made an excuse for losing this game. NOT ONCE. I do not make excuses. A loss is a loss. There are things that happen in a game, and if I feel that something happened that shouldnt I might comment on it. I do that whether my team wins or loses. I am not a sore loser. And I am not a lousy winner either (I am not accusing YOU of being that, just saying that I try to treat everyone the way I would want to be treated)

Now I know you're a respectable poster gator, but it's pathetic that you come on here and call out a player that just kicked your teams tail with 21 points and 13 rebounds and yet you expect no comments. I give you credit for editing, but people just like me saw the post and those comments.

OVER and OVER and OVER I have been in here giving that kid credit for playing a great game. And for being a great player. Once again, I retracted what I thought were inappropriate comments, I deleted them because I thought I should NOT have posted them, and I apologized, and YOU are the one that keeps going with it.

Yes Milan dominated and all you guys can do is point to oh we were withing 1-3 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.... completely ignoring the fact you were down 10 after the 3rd qtr. Then you ignore the fact that you got outscored 14-0 to start the 4th quarter. 4 quarters= a basketball game. I would love to know how many minutes of those 32 were with Milan up double digits. I'm sorry but there is no excuse that can sugar coat the fact Milan dominated Upperman! You can't use fatigue because Milan plays only 6 players; you can't use personnel because Davis is Mrs. Basketball Candidate; you can't use anything except Milan turned the defensive intensity up.

We lost to a very good basketball team. I have not seen them play enough times to say if they are a GREAT basketball team. There is too much that goes into that. I think they have some fine basketball players, and I wish them nothing but the best on saturday, and into the future. Except when the Poston kid plays Michigan State, and then I hope she loses. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> But that is nothing personal.

If you want to say Lashay played well when Poston was put on her then you can lie to yourself but the facts remains that she was taken out of her game after Chantel was put on her after she scored the 9 points on Simpson.

The game certainly changed when Poston was on Davis. No denying it. But this is not a game of one on one. I think the Davis kid played pretty well. We didnt get this done as a team. AND. Miss Basketball goes to ONE person, but it is really a TEAM award. Poston would not win without great support from her team. Davis would not win without great support from her team. This is a team game, and your team beat our team. Pretty simple.

6 points, 3 of which were terrible calls by the officials after Chantel supposedly fouled her, were scored by Davis.

The refs were terrible today. I am not using that as an excuse for losing. I have said it earlier also. No excuse. But they were terrible. If you say they blew calls against your team, I certainly believe you. I know they blew them against mine. I dont see any room for us to disagree here. They were just terrible. One in particular, the other two, were just not real great. It is a shame that these girls work so hard all year, and then run into a piece of crap like that. HORRIBLE. (notice that I am not claiming they cost us the game. Not scoring more points than the opponent is what cost us the game)

She didn't drive much with Poston guarding her because she knew she couldn't take Poston off the dribble. Without her penetrating, Upperman is a good, not great team.

I cant really argue this. Im not sure if I agree 100% but you have good points. I will just add, as I have said before, if Upperman knocks down the open shots (the shots they NORMALLY knock down) it changes this game completly. But they DIDNT. Many reasons for that. Bottom line, Your team won. My team did not.

I would love to talk to you about the ONLY thing that I had a problem with, that I tried to delete earlier. But I will not do it here, because I REALLY am not trying to call the kid out. It is a simple thing, and it does not make her a bad kid. I just do not want to talk about it here, and make it look like I am trying to call her out.

ALSO, I have apologized for comments that I felt were inappropriate, and I deleted them from my post even before you replied to them. I would greatly appreciate it if you would go back and delete my comments from your reply. I think it would help things here in a big way. Thanks in advance.

I can't believe you just said that about the graduating seniors from GC"You guys lose 4-5 seniors, but besides Pate none are big losses with that 8th grade class coming up". I'm sure that GC fans and these girls parents wouldn't appreciate that. I can??™t imagine how the senior girls will feel if they read that??¦.please delete that before they do. I never said they were starters I just said seniors. You know if you look hard enough you will find something wrong with anything we say. Gee give me a break.

You know the comment you made about the GC seniors tells me all I need to know about you. It??™s not about the girls to you but it is to us. So please for everyone??™s sake let me end this here. tvols75...you are absolutely right about everything you have posted. I was so wrong & I can't apologize enough. I can??™t believe we even thought of competing with your team, your district or even in this state. Please except my most sincere apology for praising any of these girls. I take it all back. I was so wrong this was a horrible game how did either team make it to the finals. I didn't mean to hurt Poston or Gray by saying they are Pure athletes. Please except my deepest apologizes. I will go to bed now & let you, tvols75, get back to your pi$$ing match with anyone who dare has opinion that doesn??™t match yours.

I really do apologize to our girls for trying to get this guy to admit that we are a good team but Milan was better without slamming anyone.

1. According to your logic, the GC fan meant that the GC seniors weren't the "heart" of the team since the "heart" of the team is coming back. I didn't slam any GC players, but Pate was the only starter and in terms of production there is going to be a gain with that amazing 8th grade class coming up. You run out of ammo and use something idiotic when the GC fans know exactly what I meant by my statement.

2. Your summary was that Upperman will be back while GC loses 4-5 seniors, OC loses 6-7 seniors, etc.... That's misleading. GC does lose 4-5 seniors but who are those seniors they are losing and what is coming up? It would be misleading for me to say that Milan will be there because they are either defending state or state runner-up champs and only lost two seniors.... and not mentioning those seniors happen to be Chantel and Shaniqua.

3. I didn't bash the Upperman players.... I stated the obvious observation of the game. Chantel gets put on Lashay and Lashay scored 6 points in the final 26 minutes. If that's bashing, then yeah I guess I'm bashing. If me pointing out that Coach Volbert told his players to back off everyone besides Lashay Davis is bashing then yeah I guess I'm bashing. If me pointing out that Milan had a double digit lead comfortably through the 2nd quarter before Upperman cut it to 5 because Chantel had a mental breakdown and then only to point that Milan re-built that double digit lead from about the 5 minute mark of the 3rd quarter until it ended with 14 straight points in the 4th quarter.... then yeah I'm bashing.

4. I have a pi$$ing match with no one. Obviously you can't handle an analysis of a game and then I'm a bad guy for defending one of our players for being a bad sport.

I do apologize to gator, but it just really made me mad at the time because I saw no point in it on a message board and thankfully he did as well.

Oh my goodness!! All I asked is what kind of defense Milan used to slow down Davis. Didn't mean to start a war. Sorrrry. /ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

Does anyone know enough about basketball to answer? Was it a mostly 2-3 zone, Box 1, Man? Did Milan FCP much? Just want the basics of the defense, not how much better one player or team is better than the other. Thanks for a straightforward "strategy" type reply in advance.

you see i have to agree with the 7AA posters in here

they have realized that 13AA is the power now in AA girls basketball by their statements "nobody thought we could hang with Milan but we did"

i like the sound of that ... they are saying "we hung with them" when they get beat by 20

we have been saying that 13AA is better and they finally are realizing it

and it ain't gonna get any better, because 13AA has the best sophomore class in the state ... 12+ college players in that grade alone

(oh by the way Milan was 3rd in 13AA regular season district ... you need to thank them for knocking out the 13AA #1 seed Obion who beat Marshall County earlier this year by about 20 points ... so now you can have a decent final instead of a blowout)

Even if Obion had made it, they were off their game the last part of the season and it would have been alot closer if they had a round 2 with marshall

gatorbill, your thinking of Julianne Joyner...those were probably the biggest three's she has hit this year!!!

turnadouble, Gibson Co. does have 4 or 5 Seniors..(#55Jennilee Pate(starter), #43 Felicia Huey, #23 Mitzi Murphree, Lauren Martin, #53 Kristina Smith)...What we have returning is the heart of our team! We return PG #11 Heather Butler (future Ms. Basketball candidate), G #10 Jeniqua Jennings, G #34 Brittney Garner, and F #54 Heather Griffin...Butler and Griffin are only Sophomores this year. Gibson Co. has the best Freshman class coming up next year in quite some time...IF we don't win a state championship or two within the next 4 years I'll be VERY surprised!!!! We have talent galore coming up into the high school next year!

GC should have a great 8th grade team EVERY year. They have 5 feeder schools. That is 25 girls that have played for atleast a year of middle school ball. Can you imagine having 25 girls coming into your program EVERY year that have experience. Most schools are lucky to get 1 or 2.

oh oh ohhhhhhhhhhhh...wait. One more thing.

To all of the DanaHaters out there, including the bunch that was sitting in front of our camera girl (those happened to be from Milan):

Upperman was in position to win this game. They had the open shots. They had GOOD open shots. The gameplan worked. The shots did not fall. That is basketball, and that is life. If you dont put the ball in the bucket more times than the other team, you dont win. This was a great coaching job, it just didnt work out for us tonight.

Great game by Milan. Once again, good luck tomorrow.

Gatorflap,

I told you that she would choke. One game later . You should have made that bet.

What attitude was that? The only attitude she had was when she got the ball stolen from her before the 2nd half then threw a lazy pass for a TO on the inbounds. Besides that, what are you talking about?

Also, Upperman didn't get the shots they wanted. You're sugar coating the fact that Upperman was manhandled defensively by a good defensive team. There's no shame in that. Upperman got open looks from players that Coach Volbert told his players to back off of and let shoot. I call that good coaching that he wants those players to take and miss open shots because obviously he knows some of them aren't confident. At one point there was an Upperman girl in the corner a couple of feet inside the 3 point line and looked over to the bench as to seek permission to shoot an open shot because Coach V told Hamn to back off her. She shot and missed.... plan worked.

As I said, Lashay Davis couldn't handle the pressure from Chantel Poston. She got 9 quick points in the first quarter because Coach V wanted to save Poston from potential foul trouble and insert her vs. Davis in the 2-4 qtrs. and had Simpson guarding her. After those 3 threes he quickly put Poston on her, and she had 6 points (should've been 3 if the refs don't call two phantom fouls on Poston during Davis's drives resulting in 3 out of 4 FTs).

I highly doubt that the official mistaked an order barked at a player for one barked at him. I mean when you say something like "Box Out" or some other basketball term, a ref has to know that's not aimed towards him. It may have been, but it's extremely doubtful that he can mistake basketball lingo for criticism.

Shaniqua Gray is a human video game because she makes moves that are suppose to be impossible for a girl to make. Chantel was amazing as well and nailed everything. I'm not sure about the stats, but I think the person that said Chantel missed a lot is mistaken.

You are totally wrong on Davis . Davis did score on Poston the difference was Coach Mcwilliams changed the plays. She wanted to work the post to keep Poston out of the paint for rebounds. If you noticed Davis stayed high the second half and tried to work ball in on a pass instead of doing what brought them. When Davis drove on Poston she scored and Poston picked up her fouls that she had when Davis drove. If we wanted to take Poston out of the rebound situation the answer was to drive on her and let her pick up fouls not take our scorer out of the game. This was the only way to get Poston in foul trouble as she plays a very clean game and is faster then most players. If she was faster than Davis it is not enough to make a difference she still was reaching to keep up. However no one on the Upperman team can jump with her. The phantom fouls you probably couldnt see Poston was grabbing her shirt as she went in. In front of our goal they were easier to see than from the otherside of the gym

Coach McWilliams' record speaks for itself.

What is your record as a HS Coach?

Regular Season:

Post Season:

State Tourney:

Please explain to me how getting beat by a better team =choking.

I will stop back sometime to read your reply. I look forward to it. But other than that, I am done with this place. I can get called names and bashed by people I know in real life. I dont need it on a message board.

I dont even have a player on the Upperman team. But I am a fan of the game, and a fan of the style of play that upperman plays.

Im done here now. Go ahead and rip me some more, I will not be replying in this thread, or any others. I am fair game:

Have at it.

Edit: there are a bunch of good people at Upperman, I apologize for my ONE sentence that set off an embarrassment of a thread. I appreciate you welcoming me into you gym to watch your kids play, and I look forward to next year! Go Bees.

On drives she scored 3 points vs. Poston all coming from the FT line. The other was a long 3 that any coach would just let her keep shooting if she wanted.

The one down on our end was a clean play that shouldn't have been called FTs, and it came right after that tall girl hacked Perica on the other end so Coach V wasn't happy. From our end the one down there where Lashay picked off a lazy pass looked clean when Chantel chased her down and jumped. I don't know how she could've grabbed her jersey when she jumped but maybe she did.

If that was the gameplan, I can see why some bash the coach of Upperman. However, don't let it get to ya because they bashed Coach Volbert before this season too. If Lashay could beat Poston off the dribble then why would your coach have her just at the top of the key where Chantel was up in her grill making sure she didn't bust another three? When you're down by 10 at the end of 3, Lashay didn't drive. When Milan went on a 13-0 run at start of 4th qtr. there was still no dribble penetration.

Lashay is a player, and I haven't seen Upperman as much as you guys. But as I said before the game, they reminded me of Bradford in that if you stop/slow down when player then it's an easy win. In Bradford's case Proudfit like Chantel manhandled earlier in the year (true manhandling in any fan's opinion for those who didn't watch the game) and in this case limiting Lashay to 6 points the last 26 minutes of the game. I just hope those role players step up next year when I go to Murfreesboro so I can see Lashay have some help because she's a game no doubt.

BTW where is Lashay going to college?

Honestly Gator, I think everyone from Upperman enjoys your enthusiasm for the team cause I know I do. I think you have the girls best interest at heart but not everyone is like that. I really don??™t think it would matter what you said some people are out for the last word no matter who it hurts. I believe you were still caught up in the game when you posted before & you apologized but to some that is never enough. I tried to praise both teams & I never once said anything bad about anyone and I was put down like I was stupid. I just wanted UHS to get some props & I think most everyone else gives it to them. This should have never been turned into two girls playing each other or you put this one down to make this look better. The bottom line is ??¦this was a game between two teams that earned the right to be in the AA State Final Four.
