If Alcoa and Maryville don't need out of zone players, then why do they keep that option for their school, other than needing a few great tuba players, merit scholars, or chess team members? Seems like they are using the Putin propoganda method. We don't have any troops in Urkrane,( WE DON'T HAVE OR NEED OUT OF ZONE PLAYERS).

In the end regardless of the type of school if a program wins then they will ATTRACT athletes.  How many losing programs get accused of recruiting public or private?  NONE.  If you build it they will come.  People move into districts to be apart of winning programs or transfer to private schools.  Conversely many more students attend a school for the school and simply participate in athletic programs.  All schools are unique one situation is not like all the others.  I for one am for private schools playing with public and open enrollment schools staying the same.  TSSAA made two divisions so schools that give financial aid which is need based play in a seperate league.  Therefore no advantage exists there.  Also the private schools playing in the public division are multiplied up because they have a bigger school zone to draw from in theory.  The TSSAA also added a class to level the playing field to make classes enrollments more even.  What else could be done to make it more fair.  All schools have different advantages over others through circumstance or intent / location both public and private.  In Tennessee the following programs every year will be in the hunt for a football championship - Alcoa/Maryville/Milan/South Pitt/ Knox Fulton/Henry County/ Trousdale County.  Why because of coaching/talent/emphasis and tradition/hardwork.  No private school in the public league has a dynasty or consistent streak of dominance.  Most schools have a good cycle of talent and then some down times both public and private alike.  The Law of averages prevail and no one likes to lose.  If a school is not winning they need to examine what they can do to improve and go from there.  In the end thats why you play the game to find out who is best not just to win every time.

agree to some extent, but see some holes in your theory. A few years back....a good Trousdale team lost to a great Signal Moutain team in 2a semi finals. Was it more tradition and better coaching? Or was is due to fact that TC had about 400 students and that's it to draw from in the entire county, while SM had around 450 students at the school but were drawing players out of zone? A Hamilton Co zone that had over 9,000 to pick from. Then suddenly, the very next year they bump to 5a. Yea pretty fishy and they got busted because Hamilton Co is not open zoned. Blount is open zoned and nothing TSSAA can do about it. But when a school has a pay to attend policy, so numbers keep you in 2a, but drawing kids from an population area like a 5 or 6a.....that's more than a "built in advantage". That fee is not only going towards textbooks...trickles into athletics too. I agree some schools and towns have more tradition and better coaching, but put Rankin and his staff at Pickett Co and have him go play Alcoa with any joe blow coaching them and the outcome is still the same. Some of it is talent, - will give you that. But some advantages make the playing field uneven. Would be like giving Bama 5 more schoolarships a year and then say they win based only on " Tradition and Coaching". Yes Bama has more tradtion and better coaching than most schools.....but if you stack more schoolarships(pay to play) on top of that, no one would stand a chance. Edited by UpperCumberlandMan

      The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.

      I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.

      All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
