 I have read your explanation multiple times and I am still not educated.  If the game is still going on after 40 minutes from the time the ball was kicked off, and that is not "stoppage time", then what is it?  Or is just called Ref discretion time?

It's stupid, I know. It's the same concept as real football. There are times when the clock stops. No time is added. There is no ref discretion. It's an attempt to help Americanize soccer. It works the exact same way as high school football. Certain events happen, the ref will signal with arms crossed over his head that the clock is stopped. The clock begins again when the ball is put into play. Deep into playoffs in TN, the center ref will work with the clock operator so that the clock will not stop at the 2 minute mark. The clock operator will stop the clock during the game at the appropriate times, working in concert with the 4th official. This procedure will happen at the state tournament in Murfreesboro.

Regardless of classification, region 3 & 4 of A/AA has to be the most difficult road to state this year: Boyd-Buchanan vs. CSAS; East Ridge vs. Hixson; Signal Mtn vs. Chattanooga CS; Murfreesboro Central vs. Merrol Hyde...only two can advance.

I ain't much of a futbol fanatic, but the Eagles wuz pretty danged good tonight.  Thought they physically whooped the Christians all night.  Won 3-1 and could have easily been 5-0.  The game wuz 'a bit chippy' as they say.  I think the Christians got 2 or 3 yellow cards, one on the coach. teeheeju9.gif

I know they'z a long way to go, and it's hard to win out from here; but, somebody got to do it, and it might as well be my Eagles. redthumb.gif

Troll, Signal had a Soph. start and 2 freshmen play extended minutes in both halves plus two 8th graders played a while to spell the "old Guard".  We'll not be as dominant next year, but we'll be competitive.  Our JV team had a good season despite sitting some of the "tweeners" (guys who play in both games) for much of 2nd half of those match-ups.  The new coaching staff didn't dodge any hard games by playing DII power Baylor, GA's Southeast Whitfield, AAA Cleveland and East Hamilton, East Ridge, Ooltewah, and still made it out of arguably possibly the strongest district in TN with an undefeated season so far!  Proud of them!

I asked for a true explanation of "stoppage time" from my 15y/o freshman who plays for Signal Mountain varsity and has reffed since he was 11.  He says there's no real stoppage time in rec unless a significant injury.  In select from U-9 and up, the center ref will stop his watch from counting up or down if a coach, parent or trainer has to be summoned by the center ref.  In HS, pretty much the same rule, but includes time to card or warn a player or coach.  Center ref controls the game time.  That's why scoreboard clocks are stopped at 38 and 78 minutes or at two minutes left in half if you use a countdown clock like most American sports.  (I like the European feel of a clock running up until 80 and that's what we use at Signal.)  Also, game isn't called if a team has a clear advantage with possesion and a chance to score on a play.  Hope this helps!

On another topic, A CCS player suffered a pretty serious concussion tonight and I drove him to meet his parents in our cart.  Our prayers and thoughts are with him!  As important as a great season is to all of us, they're HS kids kids competing very well, but no one wants to see a kid hurt.  Thought the officiating was good, and parents and students from SM and CCS and the ones in attendance from ND while all impassioned, showed good sportsmanship.  The future of TN soccer is bright!

Eighth graders?  You gotta be kiddin' me.  If that Childress boy (who I don't like so much, by the way) finds out we're playin' middle schoolers on the varsity team, he'll be real mad at Signal Mountain again.

This stoppage time thing is about as clear as the ol' steel tub after Mountain Troll takes his weekly bath on the front porch.

Sounds to me like this is just a semantics thing.  The ref does stop his clock in high school soccer for certain events, which results in game times (from kick-off to end of regulation) that are longer than 80 minutes.  Call it what you want, but I am going to continue to refer to the period of time between when the timer on my watch goes off and the ref blows his whistle as "stoppage time".  Just seems like a good name for it.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
