Don't know much about their returning players, but they may have best freshmen class in 1A - state wide especially for rural, small county teams not including any metro privates.

That's great for VB and class A then.  Did the Van Buren group ever play the PC team "head to head" in middle school?  I've been watching those 5 from PC play together since they were in 3rd/4th grade - they are a special group.  We have a group of strong freshmen here in Cumberland County that has played against them and with them on travel teams over the years.  The Abbott kid can drop 30-40 when in "the zone" and Gibson may end of being a D1 prospect if he keeps growing and improving - 6'3"ish and dunks anyway he wants.  Young is strong and may have the most potential.  Should be some good battles in the future for you guys.

I was there too, but I don't recall getting to watch Van Buren play.  Smith County won the small division at James C Haile, beating Pickett County in the finals - I can't recall if Van Buren made the final 4 or not.  Smith County had beat South Cumberland (Crossville) by 1 in the semi-finals. Pickett County went on to win the 2A Championship at the TNT State Tournament in Springfield, TN.

I didn't watch Pickett but heard they were impressive. Van Buren won their division of the James C Hale. I think they played one division below Pickett. Handled some good teams including friendship.

Clarkrange will be good a very solid starting 5 with above average size. Looks like 3 players in the 6'4" to 6'5" range and a couple of good ones out front.

Saw a few of Crange boys at Clay Co. They do have some height on em and got a PG that can hit from anywhere. Will be tough. JC and Clay have some great players as well

If I remember correctly, none from D7. Goodpasture, D8, beat Pickett by about 30 and Clarkrange by a couple dozen as well. Unfortunately for them, they drew Mitchell game one and lost a close one.

All three of Clay's big boy's are playing football but should go about 9 or 10 strong. Bench will be strong and they will have a lot of options on the floor. 6'5", 6'6" and 6'7" with a 6'2" guard could be some interesting line ups for them.
