8-AA Girls

I assume a first round sweep will put it back in Cookeville though.

I will be surprised if it is not a sweep. 1-6 were fairly equal with Grundy upsetting Signal this year, 6 over 2. Signal and Notre Dame beat each other, barely. ND Got first entering the tournament. No real standout teams though some individuals would do well in either district. If Signal and ND are not allowed to slow things down by holding jerseys, arms and get in foul trouble they will get blown out of the gym in the region. I would call those 2 the favorites with CCS and Bledsoe for third.

I am almost relieved the season ended for the local team, at least in this area some-not all teams-took advantage of laziness by refs and fouled nearly every defensive possession. If it was called 1 of 3 times, that's chances for turnovers the other two times. It made many games really tough to watch including the season ender Tuesday when there at least a dozen obvious calls missed/ignored. Some were gamechangers. (And I could let you see a copy of the game if that sounds like exaggeration or excuses).

What's odd is back in the 80's and 90's TTU got all the good area girls going to d-1 unless it was a top tier program like Brown LA(LaTech) or Jolley WC(UT). Now it seems TTU does not get many at all. Just off the top of my head: Sells LA(MTSU), Brown YI(MTSU), LDavis UH(WKU), Sissom CC(MTSU), Caroline Warden JC(MTSU), Laken Leonard JC(MTSU), Molley McFadden WC(MTSU), Hackett SC(Mercer).

Those players chose to go elsewhere. All are a step above TTU & the OVC right now.

Rick Insell was at Shelbyville high,Bill Worrell was at Tech. Ensel fed his  players to Worrell and Worrell got the best Upper Cumberland talent that he could get . Now Insell left high school and getting all the talent Tech used to get from around here at MTSU, and Worrell since has retired. Not been the same since.. Both great coaches...

agree Worrell was a great coach for TTU. I doubt the girls will ever be the same.

Tech was a national power in the early years of the AIAW. One of their best players was Pam Cassity from SC. She played guard in the 6 on 6 years. She made the transition to 5 on 5 and was an all american. She was a rebounding machine. She still holds rebounding records. She had 30 in one game. 1782 career rebounds. She is still 1,2 & 3 on all time list. She is also in top 10 all time in scoring. That's incredible since she didn't score a point in high school....I don't think.

early 70's? Marynell Meadors at Tennessee Tech, finishing with a 363-138 (.724) lifetime record. Meadors would win six consecutive Tennessee state championships, four Ohio Valley Conference championships and two Metro Conference championships. Hada winning record head to head against Pat Summitt. Edited by UpperCumberlandMan

She was at TTU 73-77. I saw them beat UT & Pat.

Here is another from a 8aa school. Nera D. White (born November 15, 1935) from Macon County Tennessee is a retired American basketball player. She is considered one of the most outstanding female players in history. She was named AAU(pre womens NCAA) All-American for 15 years in a row from 1955 to 1969. She led the Nashville Business College team to ten AAU national championships during that period. White was named the MVP of the AAU National Tournament nine times. White was "widely acknowledged as the greatest woman ever to play the game". Harley Redin (head coach of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens, the dominant team of the 1950s) called her the "greatest woman basketball player in history". In 1957 she led the US National Team to winning the World Championship. She was named the MVP of the tournament, and voted the Best Woman Player in the World. She was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 and in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.White is one of only two players inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame based on AAU accomplishments, the other being Joan Crawford.
