they had a 400 game basketball winner coaching baseball a few year ago and didn't hire him. I think the time for sp to hire a basketball coach went out the window when he left.

LOPAO......Old Pirate says until the SP Elementary folkes gets heavily involved with a good program, basketball will continue to struggle

2 championships in 4 years is a good start...

Winning is great but Old Pirate says developing....good fundamental skills is the key to transition to being good high school players! The high school teams today would be nearly as successful today if they had only 1 hand because lack of weak hand is obvious today. Old Pirate seen a game and few could or would do left handed lay ups...! Bad teaching/coaching! Dad burnit, you take an old skillet slinger, theys a HEEP as good with a skillet in either... hand. Today....mostly have to worry about jest blocking one or jest staying out of reach. You knows OP ain't joking neither.. Edited by OLD PIRATE

I think Coach Phillips is a good coach...tough when you don't have them till Dec..needs more talent...He is a very good teacher..hope he stays...hope you get some good applicants...

Old Pirate's point exactly.....they have to be taught good fundamentals when young and taught to improve over time...........

And what kind of record did that propel the Pirates to in baseball that year?

Not sure that is even relevant. Question is what would the basketball program have been if he were the coach. He wasn't so what does it matter?  As to baseball he was a strong discipline guy that ran a disciplined program and demanded and got respect from our kids. He worked hard but he was not what baseball needed so he was smart enough to step down. I appreciated that. Class guy. Now as the Ambassador stated lets get back to Pirate football. Take basketball talk to the basketball board.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
