What made Dante Hickey so good?

I've been watching high school football in this state, and particularly in East Tennessee, for about 45 years, now.  In those 40 years I haven't seen a running back with more God given physical gifts than Hickey had.  He had good size and power, he could run, and he was just as comforatable running over you as he was running around you.  He had the entire package.

It was a shame that he didn't pay more attention to his academics.  Hickey could have been a great college football player.

HTV, Do you remember Big Al "Sonny" Davis from Alcoa in the late 60s? Most old times say he was the best east TN ever produced. Would like to hear your thoughts.

No, I never saw him play.  He was just a bit before me, but a lot of the Maryville types on this forum can tell you more about him than I can.  I go back to about 1970 watching high school football in this area, which was when I started playing junior high school football (junior highs in the old Knoxville City School System were grades 7,8,9 then and had "santioned" junior high football).

Al's son played with my nephew at Alcoa and was a tremendous athlete.  He signed with Georgia in football, but never got there because he was a high baseball draft pick by the Pirates and signed a baseball contract out of Alcoa.  Little Al was a great athlete.  He made it to AA baseball, but injuries ended his career.

Little Al's son was a starter at WR for Maryville this past fall as a freshman.  He has a chance to be pretty special, himself.
