3A Semi-Final - Covington @ Pearl-Cohn

What a great game.  Pearl-Cohn is a very loaded football team.  Covington could have easily quit when it was a 21-0 game in the early going.  PC was up 21-6 at the end of the half and tried to run the football inside the 10 yard line and before they could get back on the football the clock expired.  Covington came out in the second half and scored on a huge pass play.  Pearl ran three offensive plays and Covington got the ball back and went on a will-breaking drive that lasted into the fourth.  When they scored and tied it at 21-21 that's when everyone was saying "time to see the character of the PC team."  Pearl-Cohn responded on the first snap of their next series with a huge TD run.  Covington had yet another chance to fold shop but they battled back again and went on another long TD march to make it a 28-28 game.  Pearl-Cohn ran three more offensive plays and was forced the punt the ball.  Covington hit a big pass and then ran the clock down inside of the last 5 seconds and kicked a 35 yard field goal to win it as time expired.

Pearl-Cohn ran 7 offensive football plays the entire 2nd half.  That's it.  Covington methodically controlled the football the entire half and imposed their will when it mattered most.  They were the better team tonight.

Just got in after driving home from Nashville.

I was amazed at the comeback that my Chargers made tonight.

PC has quite a few great athletes (more than Covington). We couldn't match that, but our team won the game with heart, grit, great coaching, and better conditioning.

Covington has a super off-season conditioning program. In early season games when other teams are cramping up, our team seldom does. I've said for years that the 4th quarter is "Charger winning time" because we wear down the opponent. I think that was a factor tonight.

Congratulations to PC on a great year and a great game. Maybe we will meet again next year.

I dont know anything about PC and dont really care at this point. My team is out of the hunt. I will say that Covington is the best team I have seen this year. I have seen several people say that PC is going to blow the doors off of Covington. Shewww If PC blows out Covington then they have a legit shot at beating Alcoa. Covington has 11 grown men on the offensive side of the ball and another 11 grown men on the defensive side of the ball. They also have a really good high school kicker.

Im pulling for the chargers!

That kicker though....... I might have called it....    WOOOW get it Covington!!!!  He is the difference in this ball game. Several peeps around town called me crazy but......... Again Its why I am successful in my business. I recognize talent when I see it.

Great job Covington. Outside of me and your local fan base no-one gave you guys a shot at winning this game. Being down so much going into the half and coming back and finding a way to win the game really is incredible. I really wish I could have been there to see it. GO CHRAGERS! I PICKED YALL TO WIN IT ALL.

In my opinion you guys have already won the state title. Everyone outside of the Alcoa area knows that what they do there is almost criminal.... Not going to open that can of worms.....

Go Chargers!!!!!!!

One more thing when u have 4-5 players who kneel during national anthem u don't deserve to win,if it weren't for the Americans who died for that flag we wouldn't have Friday night football.

Lol and again that’s not what people are kneeling for... that says a lot of you as a man to talk down on children.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
