District 8AA

Super young, have freshman coming off the bench, 2 seniors that start but don't have experience when it comes to pressure. This group didn't see much court time last year behind a group of 6 seniors. Most of the losses came in games that were in Christmas Tournament play. Losses were close and came at the end.

York is a very talented, well balanced team that can compete with about anyone.

Watertown starts 4 seniors. They're scrappy and tough to put away. They defend well and just keep coming at you. York swept them relatively easily. They played LA within single digits all 3 games, but lost each time. They split with UHS winning by 10 in Watertown.

What happened with Cumberland Co during that 8 game losing stretch in the middle of the season? All of their game scores look close except for those 2 blowout losses to Stone, but they're overall record is obviously less than stellar.

Upperman will be significantly better this season than they were last year with a deeper bench. I have not really kept up with the rest of the district. I know LA, Watertown and YI lost quality players to graduation. LA still has Sells. Dekalb and Cannon should be improved.

Predictions for 2019-2020?

1. Upperman is going to win it all. Return 4 of the starting 5 and added a big from a different country and his dad played at TTU

2. York lost some players, but return Smith and Meadows. Still a very big team. The freshman point guard last year should be much improved this season.

3. LA still has the best player in the district and a great coach that will find ways to get him the ball, but I know they lost a lot of starters.

4. Watertown lost a lot of players and starters, but they return their PG. Other than him I am not sure what else they have.

From there on out I am not real sure how the district will shake out because I do not know what the other teams are returning, but I do know Smith County with Sanders at the helm will be much improved and better coached and they had some kids come out and make the team that can play well. I could see them surprising some people this season. Not real sure how Sanders in Dekalb will do. He lost a lot of seniors after winning  a few games but when they played Smith last year his team did not seem to have the energy his teams at Smith had, but I hope he does well down there. Anyone got anything on Macon, Dekalb, or Cannon? Smith has a few good players, but they have not played in years and most are in football right now.

Awful quite on here for 1st games to be less than a month away.

A little early...........nobody knows exactly what to expect yet.  Some think they will be better, some hoping to be better, some  will be not as good. When practice starts the mouthing or poor mouthing will start.  I expect Baxter to be the top at he end though.

Just seems like in years past a lot more talk was going on earlier than the last couple of years. I agree with you.

    • Jada Hart, Jasmine Bailey and Kaitlyn Patterson the first two being PG's are all good guards and can handle ball pressure and are good players. Raven Wells will be a good post. There were games this summer where any one of the one's I mentioned were in double figures. Gibson County will control TO's much better this year and they will press more and get back to playing faster. AA is down across the board. I have been all over watching ball. Alcoa jumped to AAA and Jackson County moved down. to A. No telling who wins it this year. I agree Union City, Westview and Gibson County will be a dogfight and must see basketball. Poster insuated that Gibson County has a mental block against Westview. Well give me Maddie Gray and we line up last year and they wouldn't have won a game. Let's see how Westview does this year. Their starting five last year had three transfers in it. Rogers from Obion, Trevathon from Greenfield and Gray from South Fulton. Looks like they swung and missed with the girl from Florida this year so let's see how they do playing with kids from Westview. Gibson County has a really good 7th grade class this year.I have done learned you play with what you got and work them hard and develop them and see what happens. Just keep battling and see what happens. I like our team this year. Very athletic. Every year is the same with injuries and can be catistrophic to any. I watched GC all summer long. South Side and GC was very evenly matched and was a classic war. Hope all stays healthy.
    • I think Gibson County is a top five team this next season but I do agree they will drop off a lot after this year.  Westview lost a ton and will be down this season and hopes of returning to glass house again is slim.  The run they have had is super impressive!
    • My take on GC for this year: Based on what I saw last year and heard this summer, I’m not sure GC could surprise me next year with any outcome. Wilkins is a great coach - they could win the district and region and go to Murfreesboro. They could also come in third in the district and not get out of region. The two returning starters are very talented but Guru is right that they didn’t always play hard last year. The other three starters are good enough in their roles for GC to be successful. There is no depth. Foul trouble could be a problem - Wilkins may avoid it by playing a lot of zone. An injury would be catastrophic. I hope they have a big year and Wilkins rides off into the sunset in Murfreesboro because, without some significant transfers, there are some tough years coming in the next few.
    • Daniel Boone coming down to 3A makes this much tougher. They added a couple transfers to the Flores girl. Cocke Co, Northview, Greeneville, and Daniel Boone - only two headed to Murfreesboro.
