Josh Jones

Recommended Posts

I don't know Josh Jones and have never spoken to him.  But my 2 cents has to do with off the field.  The way I heard it was that there is not a single football coach in the school building during the school day.  I was told this is not new for Bearden football.  As one former player now at West told me, "the coaches just show up after school and yell at us".   I know first hand that managing an 85 member football team's behavior (keeping them out of trouble) and grades (keeping them eligible) is a difficult job even with all the coaches in the building.  I guess it's possible, but that seems problematic from an outside view point.  I'm sure the program will get lots of attention this upcoming season.  It will be fun to see it play out.

I know of one who will be in the building beginning in the fall.

It will be hard for the one coach in the building, if he is the only one. Bearden parents are notorious for wanting to show up at school and want to talk to administration and coaches, with out warning. Some parents are very high powered. Then you have salesmen and recruiters. I heard there will be a new AD. Good luck to him. The principal who hired the staff and defacto vetted and approved his coaching staff said that they will be inovative and have  coaches constantly walking the halls and not be tied to a classroom or a schedule of bells that ties them to students but give them the freedom to meet the football players needs. I guess BHS football players and coaching staff will be trend setters for Knox County, the state and maybe the nation.

They just hired a great coach that has very good connections that will attract a lot of good players like lightening to a lightening rod. I know the Maryville staff pretty well also and most of them have mentioned it in conversation that they expect some big things out of the Bearden program which is good.

People said the same thing about Shinlever. Especially Maryville people because he supposedly had the Maryville pedigree. So l guess we can revisit in a few years and see where Coach Josh and BHS football are as far as football success. BHS can be a meat grinder for Football coaches. A history of a lot of turnover and not much continuity. But good luck to them.

According to tssaa site when I looked last summer most  bearden coaches was teachers in the building so it is new to this level at least if what you say is true on the current situation. Yikes!

I understand that there are no current staffers that were on the previous staff. Last man standing was the DB / special teams guy that’s jumped for a spot at another different school. Interesting staff Coach Josh has put together certain

Actually he was a Tim Hammontree player and also was on the defensive side of the ball as a linebacker. I do think Josh will be good at bringing in new players but also think he is smart enough to surround himself with a good staff.  As you said we'll just have to wait and see.

What Maryville people did you talk to? Not sure many of them would have shared the opinion that he was a good coaching hire.

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
