I heard the announcers calling those penalties a sideline warning, however that was not what the penalty was. The refs were calling a penalty for aiding the runner.

I don’t think that is correct. The referee told Richland’s coach it was because Coach Daniel stayed down close to the goal line and was not in the coaches box. I could be wrong, but that is what was told the richland coach.

Weirdest year ever. R5 has, combined, 4 of the worst teams I can ever remember making the playoffs. Yet, due to an almost even more weird R6, they have a chance to go 4-0. Not likely, but there's a possibility.

I'll provide my wrap up thoughts on all 6 R5 teams from worst to best now-

6. Forrest- Maybe the worst results in my lifetime when you look at the 2-0 start and all the hope. Worst head coach at any level I have ever seen. No one thinks this guy is in the right job. My initial thought was, let him go back to Westy and coach safeties or something. Then I remembered, this guy should not work with kids. The on-field product is not just his inability to coach the game, it's the lack of recruitment, retention, excitement, hype, support, player development, emotional feel for the game, ability to work the refs, body language during games, accountability, and more. He took Johns' most talented group and won something. Then he reached quarters in a year where the 8 R5/R6 teams were the lowest talent-wise in human history, and still choked away a chance to reach semis- TWICE.

5. Summertown- always a tough out. They play pretty good defense and have beaten Lewis 2 straight when Lewis was in our region.  Never count them as a gimme.

4. Richland- Regardless of their eventual region finish, they impressed me the least of the 4 playoff teams. Boring and can't stop anyone. Adamsville will give them all they can handle.

3. Mt Pleasant- Not built for a playoff run at all. Undisciplined and when they play a team with a coach who can make adjustments and the team plays with sound fundamentals, they are done. I don't expect Scotts Hill to be that team, but I wouldn't be shocked either.

2. Loretto- If they were at 100% strength I'd pick them to go to the quarters and maybe semis. I hope they show out against Riverside, who is vulnerable and beatable.

1. Cascade- Most up and down improved team from top to bottom and as the season progressed. Their staff would get my vote for best staff in R5. They have a chance to take Lewis down. Won't be easy.

This looks like a year where R5, even though we still aren't that great a region, might have an advantage overall over R6. Or I'm totally wrong and all 4 R5 teams are done by midnight on Nov 11.

Who knows?!

You're alright, General.  Firm, but fair.  Old, but lively.  A jackass, but entertaining, smart, & incisive.  I'll save a seat for you next season at The Stable...

the low offensive output against Richland, MtP, and Loretto by Cascade still baffles me. Forrest put up 28 on Loretto. 41 on Richland. Two weeks ago you het 13 against Loretto. Whats your take

The offensive play-calling has been questionable at times--the Forrest game, the OC mixed it up nicely-- but that has been the exception rather than the rule this season...

Versus Richland, it seemed Cascade had violated the Rocky Balboa abstaining Rule--weak legs, no aggression. Beyond that, the DC implemented an entirely new defense that failed to say the least.  I'm told that he is still kicking himself over that one.

MtP has an excellent/big line.  Cascade had two passing TD'S in the first half, so they decided to sit on the 13-0 halftime lead & proceeded to run it up the middle--resulting in 3 & outs the entire 2nd half.

Versus Loretto, Cascade moved the ball well, but kept fumbling--not sure if Loretto was stripping the ball free or what, but it just kept popping out.

I hope we can squeak by Lewis Co bc I'd feel good about any of those rematches (bc I like our Defense-not our Offense!)

The Cascade team I saw had the best single performance of the season in the entire region against Forrest. Loretto was a very close second but they still gave up 28 points and then lost their next 3 games after beating us.

A little inside baseball, National Inquirer style, A Forrest player was/maybe still is dating arguably the best-looking girl at Cascade.  This had been an annoying fact for the team, but then, The gf wore a Forrest hat to school that Friday... I'm told that the coach was livid upon seeing her walk through the halls with that blue hat & he gave a speech that would've made William Wallace proud...The players were out for blood...

It would be great to listen to the pregame speech both teams received that night just to compare.

If I was coach the 2nd best looking girl in school would be wearing a Lewis County letterman jacket and hat to school  this Friday.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
