How has Clay County been able to get competitive in football the last couple of seasons?   They were a doormat for much of the last 20 years.

I know some have already answered this question, but here's my answer

They have prepared for this season since these kids were in 3rd grade. You have some parents on staff that have worked with these kids since then. A couple of the kids were held back in Jr. High to play with this class. Lamb, Maynard, and Dickerson are good established coaches. I hear Dickerson may be done coaching after this year, and I can't help but think Lamb and Maynard came aboard this year because of the talent this year.

I suspect they'll fall off a lot next year, however, they'll be better at QB.

Nate Adams definitely has all the tools to be a special quarterback the next two years. He set the school record for single season passing yards last year as a freshmen, despite not taking over as the starter until game 3 last year, due to Arms sustaining an injury, and then giving him the starting job back in the last regular season game. He may not be the bruising runner that Arms is, but he has a great pocket presence, always keeps his eyes downfield, and reads his progressions well. He is easily the most talented backup quarterback in 1A this year. Will hurt though losing Burchett, Kerr, and in effect Adams as receivers for next year.

At one point, we had four different head coaches in a span of four years. Definitely hard to build success when the leader of the program is a constant revolving door.

Pulling for the underdogs as usual. Does Clay Co really have a shot. I looked at their schedule and they have dominated a lot of teams. McKenzie is McKenzie. Is this game going to be competitive?

If CC can emulate what McEwen did by chewing up clock and sustaining drives it will be closer than most people think. This McK team scores fast, doesn’t beat themselves, and haven’t been stopped by many teams this year regardless of class. If Clay can win the TOP battle and keep the Rebs defense on the field it “could” be a game going into the final half of the season. Watching McK on film it’s going to be an uphill battle, they definitely have more depth & skill overall, add that to the experience they’ve gained the past 2 years coming from a brutal West bracket and they are a heavy favorite for a reason.

You haven't seen McKenzie's backup QB in #14 T. Surber. In my opinion he's the best backup in 1A, as a Freshman he could've started for any HS around. However he didn't start at Qb 1, but as Outside LB and is an All State candidate this year as a Sophomore at that position. He will get his reps as Qb1 as a Jr, and Sr. & could quite possibly be Mckenzie's next Mr. Football candidate from 1A. You heard it hear first. Feel free to ask any other posters from this area!
