I think they’ve tried the high school coach thing and will probably back off of that. Not seeing him nor Shawn in the mix. They want someone with college experience and a proven ability to recruit. Shawn has the coaching experience and Jason has the NFL connections and that experience. Either would make great position coaches and could gain experience that would lead to the college coaching ranks. I just don’t see Jason uprooting his family. And I may be totally wrong, but that’s just my opinion.

Jason agreed to take the Lipscomb job last year then backed out because his oldest son didn't want to move. His oldest is a junior this year.

Maryville High School has been know by three previous nicknames — Red Elephants, Crimson Whirlwind, and The Red and Black — prior to 1936 when the school became known as the Rebels in response to sanctions brought against the football program. Maryville High was suspended in 1935 from playing any teams in Tennessee as a result of using two “illegal” players in the previous season, according to an Aug. 27, 2004, story. Its current name is attributed to a comment made by then-Coach Dean Bailey, who said his team was a bunch of rebels against the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

Not sure about the 36 or 37 season but I do know for a fact the team was called the Red Rebels in 38 and has been since. Even though the teams had the little Rebel Man on the front of the game programs for years up until the late 80's but they clearly said Red Rebels. There's a bunch of them at the barber shop to look at. When that program changed Maryville was doing it's best to avoid confliction between the two. To me personally Red Rebels has always been the name but bad marketing by someone shortening it to Rebels like the end zone among other things still connects us to what we're not. The story about the 35 team has a meaning behind it and I would hate to lose our name one day over bad marketing mistakes which draws out the idiots like Teeter Tot to hang onto.

In my personal opinion, I don’t think GQ should have went to ETSU. It’s just not a good fit. What I’m saying is from what I’ve always read about him and watched his interviews he’s a Christian, a good man that likes to better the people around him and ETSU Is far from any of those things. My daughter just graduated there and said that was the biggest regret in her academics. You can see today in most of these colleges, how the students behave. In a HS setting GQ could do some good with the kids but at the college level forget about it. Burning flags, not knowing if they’re a boy or girl or cat or whatever they decide, nope. Quarles has morals, good character and ETSU is the very opposite. In my opinion anyway!

I know that’s where they need men like him but they don’t. So the coaching job there wasn’t a good fit. We all learn in this world and GQ is no exception. You can bet he’ll think his next job opportunity through a little better.

That must be why he taught and worked at a private school all those years fore he went to a University.

Interesting to see your response, this is something I have been pondering for a while (not necessarily in a football sense but in a broader way, still the concept is the same)

Bottom line, he inherited a top 10 team and just had to keep the ship sailing....

You know what he didn't do? Keep the ship sailing, sinking into the pit of the Socon.

He was a great high school coach, but you also have to be able to recruit and unify young men from many different backgrounds.

He failed horribly at all those things, he also did not increase offensive output and lost many winnable games.

What is the one thing you can change to fix all that?

Fire the coach and get a new one. Which is what they are doing.

Transfer portal and NIL is a new world and its not easy.

    • No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
