Glad to see it. Good for old Everett High (Parks & Rec) field and good for the programs they support. Will enable much increased and multi use of the field. Interestin’ tho how this passed w/out so much of a blink of an eye or question from  the mayor’s hand-selected budget Cmte, and then the entire Commish, but both county high schools had to go thru 2 years of tedious, ridiculous and hellish debate 2x OVER in budget Cmte and then again in the Commish, which was further manipulated & complicated by an incompetent purchasing dept debacle that purposely stalled the process, and then lots of push back from the mayor’s camp of minions on the Commish, etc,  (even tho school board had already approved it TWICE, to spend just SOME of THEIR OWN robust fund balance -ie not the general county’s money) to get their fields finally upgraded. Obvious political agenda against & disparity towards the schools. Why does the mayor hate the schools and resent them so much and why did he try every way in the world to block the schools from spending just some of  THEIR OWN money on said fields?!? But the parks & Rec request went thru w/out so much as one question? (Again, glad it did & glad they’re getting it. That AIN’T the dang point.)

Both WBHS and HHS should have played on turf LAST YEAR. It shouldn’t take such a stinking FIGHT to get what’s rightfully needed for the schools, when there is absolutely zero fight or debate for same/ equitable request to upgrade another govt funded facility.

If we want better education and athletic initiatives to go thru for county schools, then we need a NEW mayor. Hoping someone who is actually FOR schools will run against the current executive leadership. WE NEED A CHANGE.

FarmTeam just sayin…

If our leadership had put some kind of impact tax on all the people moving here from other areas and slowed this invasion down they would have had all the money they needed. Instead they allowed those people to move in and flood an already overburdened infrastructure buying up our properties driving prices through the roof and not getting a red cent for the damages they have caused. When someone sells a home in California for $2 million and comes to Tennessee and buys the same thing he had there for $600,000 an impact fee of 25 to 50 K would have paid for all the problems they have burdened our infrastructure with. Our leaders have no insight apparently on the future problems they have overlooked that will come back on all of us. If you are a lifetime resident of Blount County and you sell your home you cannot buy back what you just sold. I could write a book but we all know what's going on. This will all come tumbling back on everyone that lives here eventually and I hope I'm not around to see it.

Don’t disagree w/your assessment on those moving in here. But this was NOT abt having the money. The schools HAD the money sitting in a healthy fund balance for two yrs: It went thru school board,  budget Cmte, and Commish in 2022. Was held up by a purchasing dept director who didn’t know what the heck they were doing. Or IMO likely DID know and was maneuvering at the direction of executive leadership, to create a technical snafu related to the bid process (which should have been easily sole-sourced in the first dang place, if done right.) So it had to go thru the WHOLE process again in 2023. Political obstructionism at its corrupt finest to make it he!! on the schools, to try & prevent it from happening. Hence the major delay. Also interesting how that director of purchasing quickly left before they could be questioned abt the whole debacle. The schools sat on the money for 2 yrs, but couldn’t spend it, based on approval process required by state law to spend fund balance. (And the money btw, could not be spent on things many argued it should be, like more teachers, bc you can’t spend fund balance on RECURRING line item expenses, only ONE time expenses , per prudent fiduciary practice.) Ended up costing the schools much more, bc a year later, the price of construction materials & everything else went up!

Similar thing happened w/ the field houses. Money was available, schools went thru the right process, but minions of the county executive leadership on the Commish obstructed. Fast fwd a few yrs later & both county schools finally got them, but the schools didn’t get the design or construction they originally proposed, or at the lower bid cost. It took forever, AND based on what the schools were forced to do to get them (ie have the county construct them), it cost several $100K MORE, construction & design was shoddy, and they don’t even have a water fountain in them!! What idiot doesn’t design and build a fieldhouse & workout facility w/out a water fountain? I’ll tell you who: The executive C-Suite leadership of Blount Co, who maneuvered to have it be done THEIR way, or not at all. It cost the schools way more $ to get a substandard facility than what they originally asked for and had a bid for.

While we’re at it, ask the co executive leader what happened to the $20K of tax payer money that was used on a study for the Eagleton ballpark renovation. I’ll save you the trouble: The study & plan was completely IGNORED, UNUSED and WASTED, in favor of the one the executive wanted. Will be interesting to see if said leadership will maneuver to turn the new potential cash cow back over to the 2 commissioners in his camp who were running it when it was a dump.

Ppl wonder why things don’t get done correctly, expediently, efficiently and why their tax money is wasted. They’d know if they just paid closer attention to the actual facts, the alliances in leadership, and followed county budget and commission meetings closely instead of relying on the local rag sheet, the one or two idiot blow hards on the Commish as well as all the fringe so-called conservative radicals from out of state on social media to inform them.

The biggest problem with getting anything done is leadership trying to figure out how they’re going to get the biggest kick backs. I bet whoever got the bids for the fields worked out a pretty generous agreement with the mayor and members of budget committee.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
