As the season gets nearer here's an updated look @ DB 2024

Wins (5) - West Ridge, Asheville, Mo East, William Blount, David Crockett
Losses (3) - Greeneville, Elizabethton, Science Hill
Tossups (2) - Farragut, Jefferson County

I look for Farragut to be down, they have a new coach since Eddie Courtney retired and his son has taken over. Might take him a couple of years to get things going again as Farragut is getting killed in the West Knoxville recruiting battles with Bearden, West, Catholic, Webb and even Grace. I think the Indians beat the Fox Den crowd. Jeff County was pretty good last year and not sure how much they lost but that one probably is a tossup. Science Hill, well it depends on how the season develops....

There's already a lot of empty seats. The upper deck is rarely half full unless you have a Maryville or if it's the Science Hill game. That was built more for Funfest concerts anyway. 1/3 of the "fans" are long time DB football fans. 1/3 are students, and 1/3 are there to see the band. When DB starts stringing together .500 or less seasons the students will just start going to the mall parking lot to hang out on Friday nights. The longtime fans will lose interest, and the Band parents will be the only ones left. At that point they might as well abolish football and have Band Shows on Friday nights.

That will get a coach gone faster than anything, I would say if they were 9-1 or 10-0 going into the playoffs more seats would be full.  I remember going to a DB season opener back in 2015 and the place was packed.

Does the coach have the autonomy to play the best guys, or does it depend more on who is related to the biggest donors, etc.?

They put the best players out there. It's just so dang boring and frustrating to watch DB with Christian as coach. They never call trick plays, never get the ball to the outside with speed players. Heck, they hardly ever throw a pass further than 15 yards. Going deep is only for our Secondary to play against.. he never puts pressure on the Defense.

The perfect game for Joey Christian is - 15 plays on opening drive, 80 yards, 6 min drive with a TD. 2 possessions a quarter is all he could ever hope for or want. Nobody is happy in the stands... packed always and nobody likes what they see on the field until halftime.

I will buy my season tickets, just so I can keep those seats for when we do have an exciting, dynamic coach. DeBusk should have just traded coaches with Volunteer. Prob grooming McMillian to be next HC, IMO.

That's what you get when you form a fake coaching search committee to supposedly conduct a nationwide search for a head coach to replace the guy that's retiring. And the retiring guy had already hand-picked his replacement that was on his staff. After the "fake interviews" they passed on Shawn Witten who has since went on to win back-to-back State Championships and one runner up in the past 5 years at Elizabethton. Christian is a good guy, and he was a good assistant. He is not a good head coach. McMillian is also not head coach material. A school the size of DB, with the long tradition should never be settling for these Boys Club caliber coaches. If they had an ounce of common sense, they'd get the school board and the doners together in a meeting, get their money together and make an offer to Shawn Witten (and staff) and be done with it. But they don't have an ounce of common sense. So there's that.

Oh, and I beg to differ on "putting the best players out there". The quarterback situation last year shows they do not. That one was obvious.

EXAMPLE - JOEY CHRISTIAN - DB COACH - HAS NO IDEA WHAT FOOTBALL IS TODAY

This is a quote from the Times-News today - regarding playing 7on7.

“There’s nothing about it that resembles football, but it’s kind of a necessary evil. We’re going (to Science Hill) Thursday, and that’s about all I can stomach,” Christian said. “I’ve stressed to the team, we’ve got to compete, compete, compete every day we’re out. Got to get better.”

7on7 doesn't resemble Football? It's all passing...that's how 75% of the teams play today, 75% of the time. That's why DB can't compete, not going to adapt to a new style of play, just not going to do it. It's all O-Line and running the ball (and running out the clock) for JC...which gets him and DB beat regularly by ALL "better than average" teams.

"DB fans have had about as much of your coaching as we can stomach!"

The sad part is that Christan has the job for as long as he wants it. He's never going to give it up. Where's he gonna' go? Volunteer?

DB is not the only school that is getting out coached most every Friday night!  Very few schools have the administration, parents, faculty and school board pulling on the same end of the rope.  Until high school athletics become a priority for the community you will NEVER WIN outside of your geographical area.

Staff file photo / Hixson High School announced the hire of Josh Edmondson as the next head coach of its wrestling program this week. Josh Edmondson, who has helped multiple high school wrestling programs in the Chattanooga area win TSSAA state titles, is eager to help Hixson become a championship contender again after being hired this week as head coach of the Wildcats. The 40-year-old Edmonson, who wrestled at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was a two-time Southern Conference individual champion for the Mocs, most recently coached as an assistant for Soddy Daisy's 2023-24 team that set the Class A state record for most team points at a state traditional tournament. Edmondson was a standout at Medical Lake High School in Washington, where he went 28-0 as a junior to win a state title, and went on to win a junior college national championship for North Idaho. He transferred to UTC for his junior season and won back-to-back 184-pound titles at the SoCon tournament in 2007 and 2008, years in which the Mocs also swept the conference's regular-season and tournament team championships. He has spent more than a decade putting that experience to work as a high school coach, and for Edmonson, it's not just about making better wrestlers. "My passion is to teach young wrestlers discipline and get them ready to go out and face the challenges that life is going to throw at us," Edmondson said. "When a former athlete comes back and says you were a big reason why they were able to fight this fight or get a job or be this parent, that's what keeps me going. That is the passion I am looking forward to putting into these kids." In his first high school coaching job, Edmondson teamed up with college teammate Joey Knox to help Central win back-to-back TSSAA state duals titles in 2011 and 2012. Edmondson then joined Garick Hall at Hixson and helped the Wildcats win a state traditional title in 2014, the program's first since 1973. Edmondson is excited to not only help rebuild the Wildcats, who most recently made it to state duals in 2021, but also help lead the high school's girls' wrestling program and a kids' club for Hixson. https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2025/mar/26/josh-edmonson-has-big-plans-as-hixsons-new/
    • If you are good enough schools overlook a lot to take you(see any of the Ferrari’s and their traveling circus). I’m sure he will end up at like Okie State in the end.
    • That’s because they have about half the students and not near the NIL that a place like App State does. But in the end you still have to live in Boone NC and sorry AppVol, no reason to live in Boone or North Carolina in that regard!
