Gary Rankin

Yes, Augustus but David Alsup won

a state championship in 1984 with

somebody named James Howse. He also was

the first head coach when Blackman opened

their 25th year in 2024.

Thomas McDaniel won a state title in 1998 as well.

Take your RED, WHITE AND BLUE GLASSES off.

2023 Riverdale 25 Oakland 24--Oakland got *69'ed

the 69-game home win streak was over.

2024 might be different we shall see but Kyler Creasy

is the starting quarterback and Patrick Freeman is not

the back-up because he is playing golf with his brother Micah.

The golf ball won't sack Freeman like those linemen and

linebackers will.

The difference is when Rankin got to Riverdale in 1990

the furthest they had been in the playoffs was the second

round and no championship game appearances.

When you are 484-85 enough said first year at Smith County 0-10

so, since then he is 484-75.

No doubt Creasy has had success the difference is

Oakland won before he got there, and Riverdale didn't.

Also, Rankin is in the NFHS Hall of Fame and Riverdale

had Brayden Graham Tennessee State Gatorade Player of the

Year enough said.

Rankin has coached two guys that I know that played in the NFL

one was a first-round draft pick in Fernando Bryant, Alabama then

the NFL (Jaguars I think other teams etc.)

Randall Cobb Alcoa one that Tennessee fans say was a big miss

in recruiting because they never looked at him. He played 13 years in

the NFL and now will be an analyst for the SEC Network this fall.

Don't know how he got that gig, I'm a Kentucky fan and love him but

the SEC hates Kentucky.

They play week 10 on October 31st Halloween Night I think in 2024

Oakland at Riverdale Week 10 in 2024.

Not a homer Booger, just tryin' to help a lil bit with my perspective.

GQ was untouchable. Did more with what he had than anyone could ever expect. Never a kid out of position, never "surprised" by a game plan or a play call, mental prep for any situation was on point. Always had the perfect play call for any situation, down, and distance.

Rankin is the total package. Putting a winner on the field in every incarnation of the word... recruitin', coaching up the coaches, play calling (even if the Goons grumbled some), mental toughness, and adapting to players' capabilities while exploiting opponents' weaknesses.

In my mind (small as it is), I have to say that GQ would be my choice if asked who's the best coach ever, just because the question implies to a one game scenario... absolutely can't argue against someone who would choose Rankin tho.

Neither Gary Rankin or GQ were as good of a high school football coach as the new BGA coach Bobby Bentley.  What he did at a rural school in South Carolina (Byrnes) is amazing.  Ask MBA just how good Byrnes was when they played each other at Vanderbilt.

Not say'in it aint so, but let's wait and make sure before we put him on Mt. Rushmore. The two (three if you add Creasy) mentioned prior to your post have proven their ability to produce teams mentioned in the "best in state" on a regular basis. I myself didn't include Creasy because even though he's on track, the longevity isn't there yet, so to mention BB before he's notched a win in Tennessee might be a little premature interjection into the conversation.

Booger just sayin Movie gif. Schlitzie, an actor with microcephaly, in "Freaks" sits at a table, wearing a dress, doubling over in laughter and covering his face.

That Byrnes team was by far the best High School Football team I ever seen live. Bentley is a great coach but that team was loaded. Tons of D1 talent.

This is why I put George Quarles above all coaches.  I saw Maryville beat teams that had way more talent. At Alcoa Rankin had way more talent than all those 3A teams. Only years the talent advantage was close was those CAK teams that won state and the CPA team that beat Alcoa in 2014 Title game.  Rankin did take Alcoa to another level.

Did the starting QB for Alcoa get hurt vs ND? It's been 10 years so I forgot.
