To clear things up, a fight did not break out amongst the parents. All but 6 players on Volunteer were threw out of the game while Crockett had 3 tossed. The issues started in the girls game. The game got out of control. The Crockett fans were upset due to the discrepancy in the foul column. Both team's fans were yelling at the refs. While I have found this to be the norm at a Crockett Big 9 game, it was up a couple of levels at this game. Once the boys game started things had seemed to calm down. In the 2nd, Volunteer had a double digit lead and Crockett had been called for 5 or 6 more fouls than Volunteer. People were upset. Fans were yelling from both sides. A fan from the Crockett side was tossed for the words he had for the refs. Shortly after Crockett's coach was upset because he felt that the game was not being called fairly. He got a technical. Right after that the fight happened. It was in front of the Volunteer bench, in the paint just under the foul line. Benches cleared, a few fans came out. Cops were out. It was madness. The refs were not sure who to toss. Two Crockett kids were tossed first. Then the Volunteer coach had his video camera taken from upstairs so they could take a look. I'm not sure if the refs looked at it, but after 5 minutes.....which felt like an eternity, all but 6 of the Volunteer kids were tossed and one more of the Crockett kids. The game continued with lots of intensity until halftime. The mood calmed down for the first minute or two of the second half........then fans from both teams began to yell at the refs again. Everyone cheered or yelling things at whatever a ref called. At one point a lady from one side jumped down a few rows and was yelling right in the refs face. The Volunteer coach received a technical in the second half after a stretch of aggressive play. The game finished with Volunteer winning the game.

I am in no position to judge anyone. I'm a sinner saved by grace. However, I am ashamed with what happened tonight. It's just a game. I am proud of the kids from both teams that finished out the game. They controlled there emotions and played a physical, aggressive second half. I can not believe the way us adults acted. Especially after the fight. It felt as if we celebrated what was happening. While Volunteer won on the scoreboard. We all lost tonight when it comes to being an example for the next generation.

Thank you for clearing the record DavidCrockettFan, very informative and a class move. Good post.

Great post on a sad subject. I feel your pain. Tightly contested basketball games can bring emotional demons out of us all. Coaches and parents fail to emphasize sportsmanship as a critical component of the competitive package. Sadly, respect for your opponent is rarely taught. Instead it's win at all cost with a search and destroy attitude. I wish both coaches could have made appeals over the PA at half-time to all gathered as an example for the players and students. Kudos to the kids who finished out the game without further recourse. Perhaps all involved will reflect on the night's activity and be better for it.

Yes sir, I'll be there. Most likely for the early games only, am wanting to see what Science Hill has and another replay of the City Championship between Robinson and Sevier. Interesting fact for you, I attended Sevier in the 6th grade due to the Robinson renovation, but am an alum of Robinson, played basketball there (along with other sports), and have worked at both Robinson and Sevier since then. As you can see, my loyalty has been muddied. Either way, I win. I hate to see the winner gets to be eliminated by Science Hill. I was hoping to see one of the two advance to the sectional in Pigeon Forge.

You are in luck. The loser will be finished for the year. The winner however will still be able to qualify for the sectional at Pigeon Forge even losing to Science Hill in the Semis. the Middle 8 conference tourney serves as a first round elimination game. All 4 winners will automatically qualify for seeding in the area tourney at Sevier next week. There will be 11-14? teams or so in that one. From there, the top 3 will qualify for the sectional. One of your teams will be in the hunt next week. Seeding is based on total season's record regardless of who you've played.

I believe this thread is about Big 9 Basketball NOT MIDDLE SCHOOL. Go start another thread.

Guess I need to learn how to use this message board before hitting the reply button. I totally agree with this point of view as I am sad to say I myself have been a poor example of good sportsmanship at many a ballgame. I am very glad to say my son that plays ball is always a class act and is many time the example to me that I should be to him. I agree that it is up to us to act like adults and to set examples, but we (parents and spectators) are not the only "adults" there. What about the refs? What example do they set? Sounds like the refs let this game get way out of control long before the kids got into a fight. SAD! SAD! SAD! Why don't they take a little more pride in their JOB and try to call games responsibly. Not all refs have abandoned their responsibilty but sad too say many don't do it for the love of the game but for the easy money. There needs to be accountability so that things like this don't happen and more importantly no one gets hurt. By the way did anyone see that ref use an obsscene gesture at the South/Tennessee High game the other night? Where's the example in that?

Regarding the Volunteer - Crockett game :

The officiating that both Pioneer varsity teams have endured this season has been abyssmal. There have been mistakes by all the referees (as there always will be) but the trend cannot be denied - DCHS is the recipient of more insensible and unexcusable bias than should be tolerated. It seems that the mentality of almost all referees has been that since the Pioneers have been bad in the past, it is somehow justifiable to see things their opponents' way.

The scene tonight was embarassing. The lopsided fouls have been mentioned already, but let me assure you, there were exponentially more "fouls" than were whistled, and the antagonizing, baiting, clutching, shoving and the like by Volunteer were apparent in the boys' JV game too. (no surprise there) The officials let it go almost completely in the JV game, but tried to assert themselves in the opening minutes of the boys' varsity contest - and were out of position, slow, and basically unaware; hence the foul discrepancy.

The fracas ensued when the Volunteer post player (55) kicked the Crockett post player (33) according to many witnesses. I don't need to tell any regular posters how the Volunteer kids were playing. The clueless officials had no idea who to eject, and as has been mentioned, there was a tidal wave of ill will in the gym. Their collective incompetence threatened to foster a violent melee.

Sitting in the middle of the crowd, I had the sense that if indeed the parents did come to blows, the law enforcement present would have had no real means stopping it, and it would be neither difficult or unlikely for the two who were there to be overpowered and disarmed - and then mortal injury is in the cards. Mob psychology is an ugly thing.

We have got to have better personnel calling games. I am a realist. I don't expect perfection. At this point, I doubt I will watch any more the rest of the year. It is just thoroughly unfair. It is the same old story, only tonight the Volunteer volatility exposed what could happen when that veneer of civilization peels away.

If you are a realist how about telling the truth. The first punch was thrown by Crockett. That is a fact and trust me there is tape on that. I do agree the officiating was horrible! It has been all year in the Big 9. It was bad on both sides. I dont know why these refs arent held accountable for their actions. It is their job to call it fair and it isnt happening in the Big9. If I performed at my job as they do I believe I would of been fired a long time ago. They let cheap fouls go then its gets the crowd and the players more angry till crap like this happens. They should of viewed the tape at that point. They didnt see all the Crockett players on the floor either since it happen on Volunteers end. They should of been it locker room also. Yes it was an embarrassing night in basketball but all blame goes to incompetent referees. And it really burns me when people have to start with the Hawkins Cty garbage. Its old and I think you need to growup. Then the janitorial crew came into Volunteers locker room assuming the boys were trashing the locker room. Who the heck did they think they were. They had no business in there. Only to find the boys sitting there waiting for the game to end. Where was their AD? Oh yes I remember he was yelling at Volunteer student section to sit down. And why were they to sit down and Crocketts student section allowed to remain standing on the floor? Good question but police officers did tell him he was wrong. At that point there wasnt a Falcon fan sitting. Try to be fair Mr. AD, you really looked unprofessional at that point. Well probably not as unprofessional as your varsity coach who would not shake the hands of Volunteer. You really showed your players bad sportsmanship. Class Act Crockett coach & AD!

I will defend the Crockett AD and the coach. First off there was a fight. Second, I understand with all the emotions why the coach would head straight to the locker room and prevent a terrible situation from getting worse.

The AD had to come over because of some of the adults in the crowd. He only came over after the young lady walked down almost to the floor to yell at the ref. I thought she was going to get on the floor. After he came over with the Washington Co. police she seemed to quiet down. Mr. AD helped escort the Crockett fan out of the gym when he was kicked out. When the man returned, he was again escorted out. There is fair. If anything the bad sportsmanship came from the crowd.....both sides.

I refuse to believe that all the blame goes on the refs. Sure it could have been handled better and the calls were sub-par, but use a little self control and realize it is a game.

I'm sorry YOU are soooo wrong. Mr. AD came over and told the students to sit down. It nothing to do with a lady lady yelling at the refs. If so why did he not yell at the lady. And if it was sooo offensive why did she not get thrown out like the crockett fan? You are sooo 1-sided. Your AD is very unprofessional. When asked if the Crockett fans had to sit he said no. Why is that? But thanks to the Washington Co. police officer he told him different. Again I think the TSSAA needs to watch film of these games to see the poor performances of their refs. They need to be held accountable for their insignificant actions. I think anybody that wasnt at this game has no horse in this race to make any judgements. There is no reason why the coach should not shake hands after a game. Pure & Simple BAD SPORTSMANSHIP!

Upset Revenged!

Sullivan Central - 49

Dobyns Bennett - 88

Final.

Barn Burner!

Daniel Boone - 55

Tennessee High - 56

Final.

Fight in Pioneer Country!

Volunteer - 12

David Crockett - 20

3:58 left in 2nd quarter.

It has been reported that a fight broke out between players on the floor, which expanded and led to a fight between fans, thus the game is running behind schedule.

No fight with fans only players. Please get the facts b4 you report them. And it was Volunteer 20 Crockett 12. Volunteer had the lead from tipoff.

I have no clue why she was not kicked out. Maybe the refs just wanted to get out of there. I do not blame them one bit.

I'm not one sided. I do not have a child who has attended or will attend David Crockett. I do not work there. I do not have any family members there. I just go to support the team because I live in the community. I simply go to the games to watch and support.

The coach needs to keep his student-athlete's best interest in mind. The way the game was and the way both crowds were acting I do not see where anyone can judge him for getting out of there fast.

I wish people would not be so quick to point fingers and take responsibility for their own actions. The AD may have made a mistake. Who hasn't? There was a fight that just about got way out of hand. I'm glad the student-athletes had self control to finish the game. We as a crowd were crazy.
