Week 2 D-B @ Oak Ridge

I thought we did well to hang in there tonight on defense.  Nobody could block #35.  Most dominate defense player that I have seen play at DB since McMillin in the early 2000s.

We got whipped at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.  I was disappointed that we didn't come off of the mat and fight harder on offense.  Offensively, we are a lot better than we showed tonight.  Work hard this week boys and get better.  We know you can.

That said, DB is a very good team that should make some noise in 6A come playoff time.  Probably the 2nd best 6A team in the east. and a top 5 team statewide.

I need to watch the film but that has to rank right up there with one of worst games for an Oak Ridge Oline Ive ever seen.DB would have 2 or 3 guys hitting RB as ball was being handed off all night.Oak Ridge D just wore down after the huge rain that came thru late 3rd qtr.It couldnt have rained any harder.J.Stewart with some huge drops that cost us pts but that dont happen much.If anybody knows an Oline guru please let me know and I will pay them to come coach. There is no way our guys are that bad.Defense showed a lot of promise and will be a lot better by end of yr.I wish vs big run teams Cole would play LB because hes too good to have away from the ball. But good luck to DB and if yall keep improving I think it will be a great yr.Im just hoping we will figure out the offense like we have in past. For some reason under Gaddis the offense is always struggling early in yr

Couple of caught passes would have made all the difference. But overall our offense wasn't doing great...but DB defense is really good, so there's that.  I'm a big fan of using TE for short passes (my son played that position years ago), and OR never uses that.  I felt like tonight it might have helped since long passes weren't working and neither was the run, for the most part.  DB just has a lot of big ole boys.  We should do a lot better next week.

I meant to add that I thought the DL did better as the game went on.

My thoughts on the game. Oak Ridge is a stout stout team. I think they can make some noise in 5A by the end of the season. Their defense is better than average. Not sure what class the QB is in but my gut feeling is he's young. His accuracy left a lot to be desired. Lots of receivers open for the Wildcats all night long and the QB just couldn't hit em. That kid will get better as the season goes along though.

As always, the folks at Oak Ridge were super friendly and enjoyed the trip down. Good luck to you and Wildcat nation moving forward. As for the Tribe, now we have the unknown in Bearden who has yet to take the field in 2020. I don't like that being first region game and all. Lol

Appreciate your observation and enough can't be said about the DB team and coaching staff. The game should have been a lot closer but unfortunately our WRs were simply not up for the challenge, focused or running the right routes.

Our QB is a Sr and his passes are typically very crisp. Unfortunately the WRs can't seem to learn the playbook. Those dropped passes were sad. Running the wrong routes, breaking off routes when you are wide open is the worst. My question is why on earth would you continue to put in the same WR who 1) drops the balls 75% of the time and 2) more importantly, still doesnt know his routes?

One of the things I was impressed with last night was #38 speed. I know I’m not the only one who saw him run DBs RB down from behind with ease. Man, that guy just came out of nowhere. I know Joe was saying how fast he was on the show the other night, but I didn’t realize it till last night. That guy is blazing fast. He not only ran him down, but ran by our secondary guys too, if I’m not mistaken. I got wide eyed when I saw it. I’ll have to re-watch the game, but that’s what it looked like.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
