Humboldt coach

I wonder if they will announce the new coach before Christmas break? If they don't have a new coach in place before break they will be way behind the curve if the new guy brings in new systems. This is true for every open job but some will have an easier time overcoming that hurdle.

Even though I respect your opinion, I disagree.

I think it's the times we live in. "Some" blacks take advantage of the system, and will quickly call people racist if they disagree with them. Too much political correctness in society today, with people catering to ridiculous ideas and demands, just to appear not being racist. Having socialist, Marxist groups in society catering to weak-minded people who feel entitled, adds fuel to the fire.
As I mentioned earlier, the citizens elected this school board member and unless they see the errors of her way they'll re-elect her.... especially if she convinces the voters in her school district that there aren't enough black teachers and she's the one who will bring their idea of social justice.
I certainly hope the other rational school board members aren't in her corner.  Hopefully the laws in place about hiring teachers will prevail.

Oh wow, I guess that makes sense, still shouldn't effect who is teaching them. I feel like they can learn just as well from any race of teacher. As long as said teacher is qualified to do so, if they started hiring non qualified staff members it would open the door for them to only hire "Friends and Family" members  opening themselves for more law suits.

I think students need to see good teachers that are passionate.  Each school needs to have a percentage of teachers that are minorities.  More white teaches at mostly black schools and likewise more blacks at mostly white schools.  Peabody has about 35 percent black students with only 2 or 3 black teachers in the whole school system.  The theory  behind this is low pay.  Bright black students will gravitate to higher paying jobs.  In my opinion teachers should have more pay, black or white.  I believe schools should make a special effort to recruit these bright students.

Humboldt has a unique situation.  When you are at the bottom, fingers are pointed in every direction.  There is always two sides to a story.

As tough as this to admit, I will go ahead and say it. The reason why teachers are paid so low, is because of the benefits that are included in being a teacher. If they were getting a good salary, then everyone would want to be a teacher. That’s just how I see it. And I have the upmost respect for teachers.

I'm not sure what you mean by your statement about "The reason why teachers are paid so low, is because of the benefits that are included in being a teacher.  Do you mean their benefits are so good that they are paid a lower salary?  Can you give some examples?

I graduated from Humboldt and did color on the radio for Humboldt three years ago. It will be a challenging job for whoever because Humboldt has turned into a basketball school .

I’m surprised you colored on the radio. Most Humboldt graduates can’t color at all. Lol. (Sorry. Being a Milan guy I couldn’t help myself.)

What I mean by benefits is that they, teachers, do get two months off in the summer. They do get a month off for the spring (spring break) and now I'm starting to see the trend where school systems are giving students and faculty a full week off in the fall (fall break). Add that with 2 weeks off for Christmas break and an occasional snow day here and there, that's what I mean by "benefits." I. understand that they have to deal with students in a different way than it was 20-30 years ago. Again, I have respect for teachers, but if teachers were to get paid about $10K higher than what they're getting paid now, I do believe you'll see less of a shortage to find teachers to fill the classrooms and hallways.

I agree with the last part of what you are saying in regards to higher pay would help the teacher shortage. However I disagree about the benefits. A teacher is on a 200 day contract. Let’s compare that to a regular full time job. My dad worked at Gerdau Ameristeel in Jackson for 30+ years. He worked 7 days on and 7 days off on 12hr shifts. If a teacher works 200 8hr days it comes out to about the same. Or let’s take a regular factory job. I have a cousin that works at Dana in Humboldt as a welder. He works 5 days a week 8 hrs a day with 4 weeks vacation. Also there are certain holidays where the plant is shut down and everyone is off. In the end it comes out to only a few days difference. Don’t forget that teachers have to go to professional developments and conferences that are not part of their contract during summer and breaks just to keep their license. Let’s not even bring coaches into this. I’m a coach per say and put in more hours than I can begin to count outside of my regular work hours. Thinking that teachers are off during summers and breaks just kicking their feet up on the beach or chilling on the coach watching Netflix is a common assumption that is completely false. If anything we work just as many days and hours as most occupations and are grossly underpaid.
