Yeah I heard about that. I picked Lexington in that one but they were breaking in 3 or 4 on the o line and a new QB. I'm sure they had plenty of mistakes in the first half but sounds like they got a lot of it cleaned up. What really surprised me in 4A was Hardin County I figured they'd be down a bit after all they lost but they took it to NS.

Pope beat them himself! He had a day, 4 tds and a pick

Another Haywood Tomcat History lesson...It should be a required course...lol

I've tried to think of former Haywood head and/or assistant coaches who are currently serving as a head coach at another school.  I've listed coaches, their present assignment, and how their teams fared in Week 1.

Josh Puckett - Shelbyville (2019 - present)...lost to Tullahoma 28-14
Alex Melton - Franklin (2021)...lost to Riverdale 37-0
Bart Stowe - Dyersburg (2009 - present)...defeated MLK Prep 49-0
Adam Renshaw - Siegel (2020 - present)...defeated Green Hill 29-21
J.R. Kirby - Covington (2019 - present)...defeated Munford 41-8
Steve Hookfin - Rogers AR Heritage (2018 - present)...defeated Siloam Springs AR 21-13
Pat Mclaughlin - Cincinnati OH LaSalle (2017 - present)...defeated Colerain, OH 20-14
Mike Hodum - Fayette Academy (2020 - present)...lost to Marshall Academy, MS 26-6
Slade Calhoun - Munford (2020 - present)...lost to Covington 41-8
Orentheus Taylor - Memphis Westwood (2020 - present)...lost to Douglass 18-0

Stowe, Calhoun, and Hookfin served as Haywood's head coach at one time or another.  The others served as assistant coaches.

I'm sure I've missed some, so are there any Tomcat fans who can name any others?  I realize that some of these coaches have served as the head coach at other schools prior to their current assignment.  I also realize that there are some former assistants who have served as a head coach in the past but no longer hold that assignment.

Mathew Shearon DC at dyersburg

Thanks Tomcatfan.  I know Matthew is at Dyersburg.  Before joining the Trojan staff, he also served as an assistant at Covington.  However, I am looking for former Haywood coaches who are currently serving as a head coach at another school.

We might consider former Tomcat players who are now serving as a head coach at another school.  The only one I can think of right now is Frederick Burnette.  Frederick was named  McGavock's  head coach back in June.  Frederick played college ball at TSU.

You left out Ernie Jackson, right?

Thanks!  I did not know that Ernie was currently the head varsity football coach at a school.  What school?

I apologize, I thought you were doing past head coaches. I didn’t realize you were only doing active head coaches. But I believe Jackson moved to Nashville. I don’t know where he’s at (school wise) and if he’s coaching.

No problem.  I know that after he left Haywood, he was an assistant at Obion for a while. His Linkedin page seems to indicate that he is currently the Dean Of Students at Metro Nashville Public Schools.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
