Enrollment Numbers

Meanwhile, as we’re watching two ugly cats get into a cat fight on page 13 of this thread, I’m going to go back to topic. After watching this video, I think the TSSAA has acknowledged they have made a mistake. However, they are not going to admit it. There’s a reason why the current class situation only has a two year contract. They’re in a middle of a trial and error. But going to 4 classifications is a failure in terms of on field production, and the TSSAA has noticed that.

I feel like 4 classes was an absolute hit it basketball. Spring sports, not as much admittedly. But the state basketball tournament was one of the best in recent memory, IMO.

What do you mean by failure in on field production  ?

I went back to the Region Semifinal games in the Basketball postseason.  For Girls, there were 60 game played. Of the 60 games, 25 of them finished with an outcome of 15+. There were also 7 team that finished with 30 or less than in team points. In the sectional (or Substate) games, we had a point differential of: 42, 20, 35, 40, 23, 36, 33, 29, 28, 20, and 24. Point being, in the month of March, there really shouldn't be a game decided by 20 points or more. Yet, there were 5 games decided by 30 points. Has that happened in the past, I'm sure. However, I've noticed it more this year. Largely because the TSSAA was afraid this was coming, and it did. I'll even pick on North Side boys basketball. They benefited from the TSSAA going to four classifications. They beat Portland in Sub State to reach Murfreesboro. I knew the whole time there have been better North Side teams that didn't make it to state. This team, which to me was just an average team, made it! Congratulations to them, but they lost by 34 in Murfreesboro. Bad draw? Yes. But still, no team should lose by 34 on the highest state of the season.

The TSSAA has made it clear they would want to reduce the amount of teams that have made it to state. Personally, going back to three classifications would be more beneficial than going to four and have a fewer amount of teams going to state depending on school enrollment numbers. Either way, there would be 24 teams going to state in this proposal, or going back to three classifications.

It sucked for the baseball state tournament because Riverside was trialing a game 1-0 in the 6th inning. There was a rain delay, and the game was called. Riverside lost the game. So, imagine Peabody playing in a football game in November, down by 7 points with 8:00 minutes to go, and end up losing because of lighting? Not fair, right? I don't know if field availability due to four classifications was a reason why Riverside had to accept the loss. However, the Spring Fling usually runs from Tuesday-Friday. Unfortunately, they had to go to Sunday because of rain.

I do believe going to 4 team districts (some 5 teams) as devalued the regular season, especially in basketball. To me, the games in the regular season doesn't matter anymore.

Overall, the TSSAA heard a few AD's saying they want to go to 4 classifications, and they gave them what they wanted. I don't believe they put too much thought into this, and what the pros and cons were. They just did it. That's the best way I can put it. But back to what I said earlier in my second paragraph, they have made it clear they want to reduce the amount of teams going to state. And I do believe going back to three classifications will create more momentum than having this weird four class format.

In terms of on-court production? Energy inside the Murphy Center? What else?

I think it was good, but I did anticipate because of Covid restrictions being lifted. More fans did create a better environment. Personally, I believe doesn't give two flips about the spring sports. Some coaches want the season to be delayed three weeks. Would the spring fling be in June? Yes.

However, the teams that doesn't have indoor practice facilities have to practice outside. They can't really practice outside in February. Delaying it for three weeks will give teams more practice time on the field, warmer temperatures throughout the season (those games in March are cold). Warmer temperatures = better offensive numbers in baseball/softball. And it does give teams the opportunity to take off on Spring Break so their players can go out of town. They shut that door. But hey, the reduce the TSSAA mercy rule in football from 35 to 30 points just because.

I'd say 50 years means a whole heck of a lot in rural west tenn. Regardless our family of schools still has the NFL hall of famer. How about LC?

    • Im asking everyone to keep roy whited and his family in your prayers. Coach whited won back to back state championships at white county in 98-99. He is very well liked and respected in this area. For those of you that dont know he went missing 3 days ago. No one knows where he is. His truck was found in a rural part of the county. Thanks again. We are all very concerned.
    • West would be a good team to get behind if they can pull it off again like last year. That championship game last year was awesome.
    • I say that because he stepped out of a MUCH better situation on his own than he would see at least his first 3 years at DCA and it would take at least that much to bring him back to coaching. There are other fish in the sea, but again money talks. Need to fix the girls hoops too. Now I'll try again. Who has Pierce locked in for his staff? Hearing a McGavock man but not the Iceman.
    • I’ve heard mostly good things from the gridiron. Lots of optimism. It sounds like the portal has mostly helped, though there are a few expected defections. Comeback year!
    • Rudesell 1 year at Crockett. Coach Tate 2 weeks a Bradford. South Gibson supposedly going with jcs middle school coach. Which isn’t who I thought would get it, I know the top 2 was between him and Obion girls head coach.
