Multiplier

I’m still unclear on how a 1.8 multiplier represents a “compromise”.  I’m not saying that it doesn’t, but I’d like to know what the difference a 1.5, 1.8, and 2.0 has on the teams in question.  Specifically, are there any DI private schools that move up with a 1.8 (or even a 2.0) that wouldn’t move up with a 1.5?

According to the numbers that I have been crunching, assuming ELA's estimate on the range for the cutoff for 1A is right, and that the enrollments for the schools are pretty close to what they are now (I know that may be a big assumption, but it is the only thing I have to base this on), a 1.5 moves 6 of the football playing privates up definately; Ezell, Davidson Acad, Boyd, FRA, DCA, and USJ + CPA if the cuttoff falls at the lower end. A 1.8 adds the following to the list of move ups; CAK, Friendship, + Fayette Acad and JCS if the cutoff falls at the lower end of ELA's estimate. And if Columbia Acad. grows by a hand full of students, a 1.8 would bump them up at the lower end of the range. A 2.0 kicks everybody but Nashville Christian, Trinity Christian, Mt. Juliet Christian, Temple, and Lighthouse up. I don't know Zion Christian's enrollment, so I couldn't figure them, but I think it is pretty small and probably wouldn't be affect by any of the multipliers.

As for no celebration from the small public supporters, consider me one very happy small public school supporter.

Thanks, 1AMAN.

Given the projected ranges/cutoffs and enrollment estimates, I would still contend this isn't much of a "compromise". Ezell, Davidson Acad, Boyd, FRA, DCA, USJ, and CPA appear to move up regardless. CAK, Friendship, Fayette Academy and JCS appear to move up at either 1.8 or 2.0 (but not at 1.5). Nashville Christian, Trinity Christian, Mt. Juliet Christian, Temple, and Lighthouse would not appear to move up regardless. Thus, it seems to me that the TSSAA assigned a multiplier that affects those who can be affected, so to speak.

The multiplier is what it is. I have no problems with that. I'm just bothered by the term "compromise". The 2.0 that public supporters supposedly supported gets all 1A privates up (except NCS, Trinity, etc.). The 1.5 that private supporters supposedly supported gets the "biggies" up (Ezell, Boyd, DCA etc.) but provides some relief to schools like CAK, JCS, etc. The option the TSSAA chose effectively resembles the 2.0 if the CAKs, JCSs, etc. move up under the 1.8 plan. That's not much of a compromise.

Maybe we need to reassess after we see the new classifications.

Where is Antwan. I do not think he will agree with you on this on Gwave1. Smith made a the move for financial and geographic reasons. Not to escape privates.

I believe you are correct.

And I believe I am too. Playing Lipscomb and Goodpasture figured into the decision for some of the other schools to jump did it not. And that thus affected Smith Co's move. I realize that they were trying to form a situation where geography would place them all together but an underlining theme was to avoid the afore mentioned privates.

But I really like the idea of making 4-classes and everybody just live with it!!

Think about this: 1.8 was easily enough to bump USJ to AA in baseball and basketball, but probably not enough to affect JCS. Your thoughts?

This is one of the incorrect assumptions that those who don't understand how schools are classified. There really isn't a number for the cut-offs. Schools are divided equally by the number of classifications. Ex. If there are 100 schools in football. then there will be 20 schools in each classification. One has to remember that for every school that moves up in classification there will be a school that moves down. The only move that I am not sure of, is when a school decides to play above there classification, I am not sure that this bump up would bump a school down. So the numbers above mean nothing, the numbers are established after you divide the schools up evenly among the classifications. However it will be interesting to see if they divide the schools first and then use the multiplier or use the multiplier to divide the schools. It will also be interesting to see if any of the affective schools jump to division II, which is probably going to happen to schools in the Nashville area. This will also have an interesting affect on public schools that may move down and the regions they play in. It may move the smallest 4-a schools down to 3-a, just because the number of schools playing D-1 will decrease. Maybe Laz, C'Sense, and Baldy can crunch all the numbers.

I'm well aware that the numbers are floating in order to maintain a relatively equal number in each class. Now, having defended my honor, I will admit that I had forgotten that nugget of information until about 15 minutes after I had logged off, and I was just too dang lazy to log back on just to change it. Anyway, I spent about 20 minutes compiling (cut-and-pasting to Excel Spreadsheet) the classifications using the multiplier. Bear with me. These are using the last enrollment figures per http://www.tssaa.org/Classifications/schoolstable.htm , assume the current number of schools in each classification will be maintained per http://www.tssaa.org/Classifications/classmiscinfo.htm , and that schools are going to play in their enrollment-based class. AND allowing that the privates wont bail to D2.

I realize this goes beyond football. It just seems that football is the major sport of controversy, although that may be due merely to the fact that it's the most popular sport.

You really can't go by these numbers because there will be at least eight new schools in by 2005 plus old schools starting football for the first time in region play. East Ridge numbers will put them in AAA (under 900) and several schools will increase their numbers well above those from 2002. I have been told that IF the 5 or 6 private schools in the metro area DO NOT jump to DII, the CLASS A bracket will extend up to 400-420.

Hundington shows 424, alcoa 397. Nobody really knows what 2a schools will come down to 1a. The 1a schols got what they wanted. They don't seem to mind who drops down .

It will depend on what the private schools do... if they jump to DII, it will go up to about 380, but if they stay in it will be between 380-420?
