Name the best coaches ever in TN HS FB history

This was a fun thread to read through. The old posts and the ones from recent months.

The list obviously starts with George Quarles and Gary Rankin for obvious reasons.

In my opinion though, this list of coaches can run deep. With all due respect to coach Quarles and coach Rankin, there’s been a lot of great coaches over the years that coached at much smaller schools with less talent, and the win loss record will never tell the full story for how good those coaches are. I still want to be clear, though, and say those two guys are still phenomenal football coaches that should still be ranked one and two no matter what.

Other great coaches that come to mind for me:

Clint Satterfield - Trousdale County

Bobby Sharp - Lewis County

Jeff Porter - White House

Mac McCurry - Moore County/Marion County/Marshall County/Franklin County

Roger Perry - Portland

Ron Aydelott - Riverdale/Hillsboro

Thomas McDaniel - Oakland/Christian Brothers

Jackie Bennett - Page (Short run but very good coach. If other circumstances did not require his early retirement he would have kept things rolling at Page).

Ron Aydelott!  HA, you are kidding right?

Got lucky one year at Hillsboro when he did not have to play Quarles and won ONE Gold Ball with an all star team from METRO Nashville.

R'dale he took one of the Best programs in the State and destroyed it over a 10 year period where a GOOD Principal would have fired him in year 5!

Now is Coaching a Middle School or is it a Pee Wee team?

What I wanted was a Coach that could have handled a 100+ kid program.  That amount of kids simply over whelmed Coach Aydelott.

Yes, I would have liked Crawford back or Coach Olive from Tullahoma.  Coach A was simply over his head though.

The Coach search was simply botched by a Principal that was over his head and was too stubborn to admit it while he was still coasting/working.  Coach A was a easy fast fix for a problem the Principal knew nothing about as was shown by the Principals losing record as a Coach!

Has anybody mentioned Craig Kisabeth from Jefferson County yet? Heck, he was so good a coach he taught Cain how to wrestle and become the  mayor of Knoxville or Knox County.

I will never forget back in the mid 1980's going to Neyland Stadium to watch Dobyns-Bennett play Knox. Central with my then girlfriend who was from Kingsport. All of a sudden the PA Announcer broke the cold night air with words I could not believe...Final score, Jefferson County 50  Oak Ridge 0. ( or words very similar ). I was stunned into silence. When I came to I told my GF that if Jeff. Co. could dog stomp Oak Ridge like that it didn't matter who won between DB or Central. Jeff Co was going to be State Champs.

It was 51-0, get that a$& whipping right, Willie. Lol. In all seriousness though, that was probably the worst beat down I’ve ever seen an Oak Ridge team take. That defeat also probably did in poor Coach Bill Young, because Gaddis was hired for his first tenure @ OR the year after.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
