Science Hill is a basketball school. Johnson City is a basketball town. Building a new stadium, building a new field house for the high school, bringing back ETSU football is not going to make Johnson City a football town. There are a handful of movers and shakers that are trying to force the issue and they've been successful with that. Everybody has forgot why ETSU football was killed in the first place. No interest. Now their going to spend millions of dollars trying to kick start a football program that the community will not support. At first they will bring in the fans, probably give out free tickets all over town, then show on sportscast packed full stadiums, losing thousands of dollars and putting up fake images of success. After 5 years things will be back the same way they were before. No fans, team with losing record, coach just left, brand new stadium 3/4 empty people razing H E double L about all the tax money they just wasted.

So the same with Science Hill. Brand new stadium, brand new field house, brand new coach that's now been there long enough to turn the program in one of the best in the state. Science Hill, the largest school in upper east Tennessee, as has been said on coach t many times, the biggest selection of athletes in upper east Tennessee year in and year out. Everybody thinks they have turned some kind of corner just because the beat DB. Last year, Siegel - 64 SH - 38, Brentwood Academy - 45 SH - 0, and if I had lost my last game 63-20 to Sevier Co. I wouldn't think I had turned a corner. Not bashing just telling you the truth.

You make some good points, but for something to chew on here is how Science Hill has looked the last 10 years.    Maybe Carter isn't the answer but the records during his tenure would seem to indicate that the program is headed in the right direction.

With Carter:

2013 9-3

2012 9-2

2011 8-4

2010 6-5

Before Carter:

2009 4-6

2008 7-4

2007 3-7

2006 6-5

2005 7-4

2004 4-6

Nothing jumps out at me there. No wins for Carter outside of northeast Tennessee. But I do think Carter was a upgrade from the previous coach. It's hard to tell because it's obvious Science Hill has had better players the past two years than they have had in 15 years. And I can't tell how much of the success in 2012 was due to coaching or that super quarterback they had. And the way they lost to Sevier Co. in the playoff game last year has me wondering, was it that they thought since they beat DB nothing else mattered or was that a poor job of preparing your team for a game. I just know that the coaching staff had no clue at all on how to slow down Sevier Co........... Coaching? No corner has been turned yet.

Looks to me like Science Hill has been a pretty solid team and has gotten better under Carter. I was at the SH/OR playoff game in '12 and I thought their QB was a stud. If Hall for OR hadn't had a monster game like he did SH would have beat them, And OR had a pretty dang good team that year. I think that win against DB last year was huge for them considering they hadn't beat DB in almost 2 decades..... It's always good to end a streak like that and get the monkey off your back.... It had to do wonders for the teams psyche going forward.

True, Hall had a great game that game. But, on the other hand if Hayes hadn't of been there for SH they wouldn't have even been in that game. He almost singlehandedly beat us himself. Thankfully we had more than just Hall that game although he did great Matthew Moore had a loooong KO return that killed SH. They were tough that year and that was a great game. Reed Hayes was awesome for SH.

Well it did do something to their "psyche" going forward because they lost their next game to Sevier Co. 63-20. A team that was about equal to DB. Carter might turn them in to a state power but I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think he will. Maybe if he can beat DB 3 out of the next 5 and win 2 or 3 playoff games a year I'll then say he has turned the corner.

I do believe Carter beat Farragut in the first round of the playoffs in the week after beating DB. SH made it to the second round. Not sure where DB played that week..... Oh..... Never Mind.

Boy you really got me there! I don't know what I was thinking. I guess Science Hill really has turned the corner, Carter is a better coach than Clark, and Science Hill has a better football program than DB. You just proved that. And after all getting beat 63-20 is not nearly as bad as getting beat 44-0. Nothing is worse as a great big ole goose egg,

jhilts - just a word of warning my friend, you really hit a nerve with that comment, a lot of the DB fans on this board are very sensitive to the "one-and-done" comments (referring to DB running the table during the season and then choking during the 1st round of the playoffs).    So be prepared to get blasted.   BTW, DB has actually gotten to the 2nd round more times than not, although last year was an exception, as you said.      I agree with you on SH too, the record clearly indicates they are going the right direction.    Is that because of Carter?    Maybe a special batch of athletes who happen to play at the same time?     The new stadium?     Hard to say, but for sure the DB/SH game this year is going to generate a lot of interest.

Hay blazer, I started a Science Hill thread for you and jhilts.  So you can go over there and smootch & kiss all over the Toppers. If that doesn't work then you two should just get a room.

Your welcome

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
