If you leave off the word historically then I can probably agree with your list, but you didn’t so I would put Huntingdon #2 only behind Milan.  Mustangs have had great consistency, great community support and way too many wins to leave out of top 5.  The consistency over the years is the most noble and most impressive.

I agree. They have been very consistent. Just seem to come up short when they have been overwhelming favorites and are behind the others in the trophy case.  But I agree they have been more consistent than some of the ones I put above them.

Just looking at all-time wins:

Top ten rural West Tennessee teams with the most all time wins. (# of wins, losses, ties  / winning percentage / /# of seasons)

Haywood    696-401-34   .630   112 seasons
Milan   691-405-23   .628   101 seasons
Huntingdon   680-315-15   .681    95 seasons
Union City   665-427-26   .606   114 seasons
Dyersburg   603-448-25   .572   109 seasons
Lexington   531-321-12   ,622   97 seasons
Humboldt   530-371-25   .586   101 seasons
Ripley   510-470-25   .520   101 seasons
Peabody  509-421-34   .546   102 seasons
McKenzie   426-412-13   .508   98 seasons

Since the number of seasons played varies a great deal between teams, winning percentage is probably a better indicator of a team’s success.  Once again, this is just a list of rural West Tennessee teams.

USJ   .705   (35 seasons  306-128-0)
Huntingdon   .681  (95 seasons   680-315-15)
Henry Co.   .640  (54 seasons   391-220-0)
Haywood    .631  (112 seasons   696-401-34)
Lake Co.   .629  (60 seasons   419-246-4)
Milan   .628  (101 seasons    691-405-23)
Covington   .625 (53 seasons   370-222-2))
South Gibson   .624  (13 seasons   78-47-0
Lexington .622  (97 seasons   531-321-12)
Union City .606  (114 seasons   665-427-26)

According to the numbers wins and winning % and years played looks like Huntingdon is #1 historically. Played in 4 title games and never was mercy ruled in any of them. And never played in the weakest classification in the west.

Lake Co has usually played bigger schools in the past. And the powerhouse private schools.Lost with about 20 seconds to play to a private school that went on and  won the state. And could possibly had about 3 or 4 more more state titles if not for a team named Alcoa in state championship and losing players to Dyer Co and Dyersburg.Had Abdre Flowers stayed home and not went to Dyer Co and broke most of Dyer Co rushing records, can say they'd had a couple more titles.

Numbers don't lie. Huntingdon should be up there.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
