Oh Riverdaleman, Ive been trying to figure out which name you were under but after the "Riverdale Reject" comment theres no doubt now. You know I cant help but think how things might be a little different if my reciever had held on to the ball in '01, or Baker didnt make that play(Which ever way you like to look at it!) haha!

We are talking about in the Boro and in Region4.....not statewide. But thanks for the info. I dooooooo like your user-name whatever school you are supporting!!

Let me ask you your opinion tho.....was it more prestigious / harder to win a title when everyone was grouped in 3 classifications , w/o the privates split, AND with only the #1 team in the region advancing to the playoffs......or when the privates are split off......4 teams go to the playoffs and there are 5 classifications???? Please tell me what you think Patriotpride89!!!!!

This is interesting! You are saying that Shadowens is going to let someone else OC the offense! Who is Carson? Is he going to change the offense?

Well Wells was the DC for many seasons. He left and went to Blackman, where he is now the new HC. So a guy named Williams became the DC at Smyrna last season. Wells recently ripped Williams from Smyrna to go to Blackman. With teaching slots tied up.........Shadowens was able to pull in Carson who was the OC at Franklin cty. So he places this guy at OC and he is now the DC. Truthfully many coaches in this area have switched out. Thomas at Lavergne was the DC at Lincoln Cty , but is the OC at Lavergne. David Alsup that was HC at BHS, where he called the O is now at Siegel where he is calling the D now. There are several other instances in the area as well. From what I understand, Shad was very much involved calling the D last yr at Smyrna along with Williams.

Didn't Franklin County have almost no offense last year? Great defense but no offense.

I think 3 classifications are way harder. There are more teams to compete against and you also won't have teams with losing records in the playoffs.

EXACTLY...much harder to get in the playoffs in the first place. Then every team that you face has bascially the same ability as you do...top in their region. No free ride "all games at home"......

Thanks for your input Patriotpride89!

OK let me try and explain myself to you....lets take our teams out of the equation... in the old days if you won your district you were in the playoffs otherwise you are out...i agree it was harder to get IN the playoffs however there was a lot of good teams sitting at home for the playoffs Lincoln county anbd Franklin county can atest to that FC would go 9-1 but there loss was to LC so they are at home for the playoffs whereas now they are in the playoffs and have a chance to win the state while i will agree that there is 1 or 2 teams in each region that shouldnt go we also can say that it is not uncommon that a 3 or 4 seed win a game in the playoffs that is why we always play each other 2 times or like in east TN when they always play each other twice and we all know it is hard to beat a good team twice in the old days you only had to beat them once as far as the private school we didnt have to play them anyway in 84 BA was still in 2A they could have been 1A but i think they were still 2A at that time

Blaze14 it was a nice poass you threw i am just glad that our DB got there in time to break it up lol

It simply meant that you had to be at the top of your game to get there every single week. So every week in the regular season was a "play-off" game. Every team you played in the playoffs was a champion already ...not a team who may have won 3 games to be there... a team who already had proven their worth. Since there were 3 classifications, you may have had to play a school with twice your enrollment, and you might have to travel for hrs to your game. Forget BA.........you ever heard of Gallatin??? Bottom line when those were the rules to get to the big show....RHS couldn't cut it. It doesn't matter what they are now or what they can do NOW.....at THAT time they couldn't cut it.

So what you are saying is that Oakland can't cut it NOW? That seems strange since it is so easy these days.

Really, it is very hard to compare different eras. In 1984, I was in Korea and my son that has graduated high school wasn't even born. I believe we still had leaded gas back then.

Did I see a post about women's golf? <_<

Dead period ends in just over 9 hours. Hopefully we can get this thread back to discussing events in THIS century soon.

We have already proven we can get it done in the new format......98 and almost again in 99...when we had 5 classes and no privates. And hopefully we will do so again in the 2000's. riverdaleman was basically disrespecting any team that won a championship in the old format. And you and I both know that any team that wins the state deserves a bit of respect. Odd how you riverdale folk seem to want everyone around to pat you on the back.......yet you refuse to give anyone any. If you read riverdaleman's other posts, you will see that football is not the only sport that he is brazen in.

Wonder who might turnup on Monday in everyone's weightrooms.....

I want to know about the twin 'monsters' from Texas! ;)

Most of all I want to see them in action! thumb

Got the 'clone' working out at the 'gym' right now. Can't let the grass grow, except at Siegal! What is a day off? Not around this house. <_<

How many days until we can actually see some hitting? All this pumping iron is getting boring.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
